Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Friday the 13th was not a lucky day for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Arodys Vizcaino was brilliant for seven shutout innings and the Hillcats' offense jumped on Barret Loux in a four-run third inning as Lynchburg beat the Pelicans 8-0.

Vizcaino (2-2), ranked as the seventh-best Atlanta prospect by Baseball America heading into 2011, dominated the Pelicans in seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball, striking out six without walking a batter. The only hits the Birds could muster off the right-hander were a leadoff single in the third by Mitch Hilligoss and a Jared Bolden infield single to start the seventh.

After getting crushed in a Pelicans sweep in April by a combined score of 26-8, the Hillcats struck early off Loux. The Houston native started the game by hitting Todd Cunningham before Andrelton Simmons doubled. Phil Gosselin hit a hard grounder off the foot of Loux that third baseman Mike Olt made a great play on to get the out, but Cunningham scored to put Lynchburg ahead 1-0.

The Hillcats broke it open in the third when a two-out double by Gosselin scored Cunningham to start a rally. Joey Terdoslavich walked and Gerry Rodriguez was hit in the head by a pitch, but he was alright as Lynchburg loaded the bases. Joe Leonard delivered the big hit of the night, going the other way to right for a three-run double to give the Hillcats a 5-0 lead.

Loux (2-3) gave up another run in the fifth on a Leonard single that knocked him out of the game. The Pelicans' starter was charged with six runs on six hits in four and two-thirds innings. He walked one, struck out four and hit three batters.

Lynchburg added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings off Chad Bell and Kennil Gomez, respectively. Zach Osborne was the third Myrtle Beach reliever and he worked a scoreless ninth.

Vizcaino was the story of the night, as he surpassed his previous season-high of five and one-thirds innings pitched. The Venezuelan was replaced in the eighth by Blaine Sims before Andrew Russell came in for the ninth. The Pelicans avoided the ignominy of being shut out when Bolden tripled with one out in the ninth and Ryan Strausborger drove him home with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Pelicans' 34th game was the first one in which they were blown out in a game. Eight of their previous 12 losses were by just one run. Two others were two-run defeats. Before Friday the Birds' largest margin of defeat was four, which happened on April 21 in Kinston and April 29 against Frederick.

The middle game of this weekend series pits Pelicans lefty Robbie Ross against fellow southpaw and Carolina League ERA leader Chris Masters of Lynchburg. First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
