Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, VA (MAY 13, 2011) - Hector Santiago took a no-hitter in the sixth inning, and he combined with two other pitchers to one-hit the Red Sox in Winston's 5-0 win on Friday night at LewisGale Field. The Dash used a four-run first inning, and Ian Gac added a home run to secure the team's sixth win in the last eight games.
Winston-Salem (15-19) jumped on Salem starter Drake Britton early in the ballgame. Britton retired the first two hitters of the ballgame, before walking Jared Mitchell. Ian Gac followed with a single, and both runners moved up when Andy Wilkins walked. With the bases loaded, Jake Oester singled off the glove of shortstop Derrik Gibson, scoring Mitchell and Gac. The inning was extended when Jason Bour reached on a fielding error by third baseman Kolbrin Vitek to reload the bases. Kyle Colligan then hit a looping single into center field to score Wilkins and Oester, making the score 4-0 Dash.
Gac continued his hot start to the season at the plate in the fifth inning. He faced reliever Will Latimer, and scorched a line drive over the left field fence for his 11th home run of the season.
Santiago (2-2) sparkled in his first start of the year against Salem (21-11). His no-hitter was broken up with one out in the sixth inning, and he only gave up one hit in the game. The southpaw threw six innings and struck out six. Addison Reed pitched two perfect innings in relief and Taylor Thompson added one to keep the one-hitter intact. Britton (1-3) allowed four runs (two earned) in three innings and picked up the loss.
Winston-Salem and Salem continue their series tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at LewisGale Field. RHP Cameron Bayne (3-3, 3.60) starts for the Dash. The Red Sox have not yet named their starting pitcher. Fans can catch all the action starting at 5:45 p.m. on www.wsdash.com.
