THE HILLCATS: Thursday the Hillcats lost to the Frederick Keys 5-4...The 'Cats scored two in the ninth to cut the lead to one but fell short, losing the series 2-1...With the loss, Lynchburg is now just 4-10 at home this season...The Hillcats once again fall into fourth place in the Carolina League Northern Division, 6.5 games back the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Frederick Keys, tied for first place...
VS. MYRTLE BEACH: The Hillcats are 0-3 against Myrtle Beach this season, as they were swept by the Pelicans at home April 15-17...It was the home opening weekend for the Hillcats...This is the first trip to Myrtle Beach for Lynchburg in 2011, although many players are familiar, as nine active members of the Hillcats squad spent time with the Pelicans in 2010 when they were the Advance-A affiliate of the Braves...
PLEASE BE CAREFUL: Lynchburg seems to be plagued with the injury bug this season, and have made a whopping 28 transactions already this season because of it...Most recently, Saturday night in Winston-Salem, OF Adam Milligan left the game with a tight hamstring and INF Andrelton Simmons left with a sore back...It was found out after the game was over the INF Matt Weaver had broken his thumb diving for a ball at second base...All three players were unavailable for Sunday's series finale, forcing new catcher Jace Whitmer to play as the designated hitter, and warm-up pitcher's in the bullpen, since there were no healthy position players available on the bench...Tuesday, Milligan and Weaver were placed on the disabled list, Simmons didn't play as he was listed as day-to-day, and in case that wasn't enough, INF Joe Leonard was at home sick Tuesday, and was at the ball park but not in the lineup Wednesday night...Simmons and Weaver have returned to action, but Milligan and Weaver were the sixth and seventh Hillcat players to hit the DL after donning the Green & Gold this season (Thomas Berryhill and Angelo Paulino both were listed on the DL to start the season and have not been with the Hillcats yet this season...
ON THE ROAD: Away from the "Hill City" this season the Hillcats have hit .267 as opposed to .231 at home, and pitchers have posted a 3.52 ERA, over a run less than at City Stadium (4.57)...On their most recent road trip which consisted of three games in Wilmington and four in Winston-Salem, the 'Cats tallied nine or more hits in each game and hit over .320 as a team...
BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Eight members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes RHP Arodys Vizcaino (7), SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...Vizcaino was tabbed the 93rd best prospect in all of baseball by BA as well...
REMEMBER ME': INF/OF Geraldo Rodriguez played part of the 2009 season and all of 2010 with the Pelicans...Through 60 games in 2009, Rodriguez hit .281 with the Pelicans...Last season, he hit.253, with 13 home runs, and 53 RBI through 85 games, earning a promotion in 2011, as he started the year with AA-Mississippi...Hitting just .224 for Mississippi this season, Rodriguez has been sent to Lynchburg to help a Hillcats team plagued by injury...He made his 2011 Carolina League debut Tuesday night against Frederick, after arriving earlier that afternoon and went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored...In three games with the Hillcats, he is 3-for-10 with a home run, two doubles, and three runs driven in...
STREAKING SIMMONS STOPPED: SS Andrelton Simmons went 0-for-4 last night, snapping a 13-game hitting streak...During the streak he hit .458 (22-for-48)...Ever since dropping from the leadoff spot, Simmons and the team have fared much better...The Hillcats were 1-9 while Simmons hit first at the beginning of the season, and he hit just .211 (8-for-38) in that span...Simmons was dropped from the leadoff spot on the twelfth game and has thrived hitting safely in 16 of 18 games since...He has batted second (8), sixth (1), seventh (7), and ninth (2) in his past 18 games, batting .403 (27-for-67) with 11 RBI, six runs scored and four stolen bases...He now tied for second in the the Carolina League in batting average at .333...
HOMECOMING: INF Barrett Kleinknecht was born and still resides in the offseason just 60 miles away from Myrtle Beach in Florence, SC and went to College at Francis Marion University in Florence...He was selected by the Braves in the 12th round of the 2010 draft, and called up to Lynchburg just this past Tuesday...Tonight will be his fourth game at the Advanced-A level here in the Carolina League and first in Myrtle Beach...Through three games with the Hillcats, Kleinknecht is batting .333 (4-for-12)...He hit his first home run as a Hillcat last night against the Frederick Keys in Lynchburg...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER : RHP Barrett Loux was signed as a non-drafted free agent November 22, 2010 while attending Texas A& M University...Drafted sixth overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2010 first year player draft but was ruled a free agent by Commisioner Bud Selig as of September 1, and signed with the Texas Rangers...Originally drafted out of Stratford (TX) HS in the 24th round by the Detroit Tigers...Was named a Louisville Slugger NCAA DIvision I Third-Team All-American, First-Team All-Big 12, and was a semifinalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes award after his junior season at Texas A&M...Made his seocnd career appearance against the Hillcats on April 16, went five innings, allowed two earned runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out four on his way to his first professional win...
