Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

FAMILIAR FACES RETURN: After 12 seasons as an Atlanta Braves affiliate, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans changed parent clubs, partnering with the Texas Rangers. The Braves stayed in the Carolina League, switching to the Lynchburg Hillcats as the Hillcats' former parent team moved their high-A affiliate to Bakersfield. Today's Lynchburg roster features five pitchers who were Pelicans in 2010, Matt Crim, Cory Rasmus, Zeke Spruill, Andrew Wilson and tonight's starter Arodys Vizcaino. Four position players spent time on the Grand Strand last year as well, Braeden Schlehuber, Philip Gosselin, Gerry Rodriguez and L.V. Ware. Thomas Berryhill, Jason Lowey, Angelo Paulino and Adam Milligan were also on the 2010 Pelicans, but are currently on the disabled list.

THE AWARDS KEEP COMING IN: The Texas Rangers gave out their monthly Minor League awards on Thursday, honoring two Pelicans and one former Myrtle Beach pitcher. Third Baseman Mike Olt was named Rangers Minor League Player of the Month for April, after he hit .317 with 15 walks, nine doubles, three home runs and 16 RBIs in 22 games. The Branford, CT native was the first 2011 Carolina League Player of the week selection on April 18. First Baseman Chris McGuiness, after 15 errorless games in April, was named Rangers Minor League Defender of the Month. Pelicans Opening Day starter Neil Ramirez was honored as well, as he recieved Pitcher of the Month. The righty pitched four and two-thirds shutout innings with nine strikeouts in the opener, earning a call-up all the way to Triple-A Round Rock. He has pitched well for the Express up there, despite being just 21 years old. He finished the month by going 2-1 with a 1.69 ERA at Triple-A. Ryan Rodebaugh of low-A Hickory was named Reliever of the Month.

A PRINCE-LY SUM OF HITS: Right fielder Jared Prince tallied three hits in a game for the first time this season in Thursday's win. His first hit in the second inning brought home the first run of the game off Kinston ace Drew Pomeranz. He led off the fourth with a single but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. He singled for the third straight time in the sixth, this time off reliever Toru Murata, coming around to score the fourth and final Myrtle Beach run on a Leury Garcia single. The former Washington State Cougar is 12-for-27 (444) over his last ten games. He's the third-toughest player in the Carolina League to strike out, with only 14 whiffs in 123 plate appearances.
