
Vipers' Winning Streak Snapped by Stars

Salt Lake City, Utah - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (9-9), the NBA G League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, fell 125-131 to the Salt Lake City Stars (9-8) on Saturday night at Vivint Arena.
In the first quarter both teams struggled to pull away from each other. With 7:29 to go, the game was tied 13-13. Two minutes later, the game was once again tied 15-15. Both teams tied the game two more times before either team could pull away with a slight lead. With 3:34 left the game was tied 19-19, but the Stars quickly turned things around as the team scored 11 points while only allowing the Vipers to score eight points which gave the home team a 30-27 lead.
Salt Lake scored the first bucket of the second quarter, but after that RGV went on a 12-0 run and grabbed a 39-32 lead over the Stars. The Vipers continued to lead until the clock hit 4:08 and the Stars took the lead away from the Vipers with a score of 51-50. After that, neither team could pull away with more than a three-point lead. At the half the game was tied 66-66.
The Stars wasted no time in the third quarter as the team jumped on a quick lead. With 4:19 to go the Stars led 90-75. As the quarter progressed, the home team managed to extend its lead even further and sent the game into the third with a 104-88 lead.
RGV turned up the heat in the fourth quarter. The team was behind 16-points, but with 5:00 minutes to go the Vipers came from behind and cut the Stars lead by five points and a score of 113-108. The Vipers then minimized the Stars lead by two points and a score of 117-115 with 2:59 to go. Despite the Vipers efforts to come back, the Stars walked away with a 131-125 victory.
Cassius Stanley paved the way for the Vipers by scoring 23 points. Jalen Lecque hit a double-double with 21 points and 10 assists. Also reaching a double-double was Houston Rockets Two-Way player Darius Days with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Jarrett Culver contributed 19 points to the team followed by Mustapha Heron with 18 points and Willie Cauley-Stein with 15 points.
Utah Jazz Two-Way player Johnny Juzang led the Stars with a double-double, 36 points and 10 rebounds. Frank Jackson put up 27 points. Stacy Davis finished the game with 20 points. Christian Vital put up 19 points. Jeenathan Williams also finished the night with a double-double, 17 points and 12 rebounds.
The Vipers will now travel to Tenerife, Spain to represent the G League in the FIBA Intercontinental Cup. RGV will go up against Sao Paulo in the Semi-Finals on Friday, Feb. 10. Tip-off time is to be determined. For more information visit www.rgvipers.com.
