ERIE, Pennsylvania - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (22-11) fall in the fourth quarter to Erie BayHawks (16-13), 109-114, on Wednesday night. The road loss ended the seven-game win streak for the Vipers.
A rather tense first quarter resulted in a slim Vipers lead, 34-31, behind Dakarai Tucker's 10 points. The BayHawks found themselves trailing by at least 10 points early but recovered to make it a three-point margin heading into the second.
A steady second quarter allowed for the Vipers to maintain their lead 64-58 going into the halftime break. Tucker totaled 18 points, two assists to help boost the offense while Houston Rockets assignee, Isaiah Hartenstein, put up 13 points and nine rebounds, just one shy of the double-double. Chris McCullough came off the bench to make his first appearance for RGV and tallied six points before heading to the locker room.
Erie was kept in the game on offense by Jordan Sibert who scored 15 points and dished out a lone assist. Atlanta Hawks two-way player, Alex Poythress, was able to surpass Sibert as the scoring leader in the half with 18 points of his own, adding on six rebounds.
Hartenstein locked in the double-double as the third came to an end with his 17-point, 12 rebound combination. Tucker grew his point total for the Vipers, reaching 23 points with ease. A new name crept into the offensive conversation as Roger Moute a Bidias tallied 12 points. Poythress continued to be the leader offensively for Erie but was closely followed by Sibert as they carried the BayHawks in the third. Erie managed to squeeze by and outscore RGV 23-24 in the third as the momentum began to shift some.
In a pivotal final period of play, Erie BayHawks outscored the visiting Vipers for the second quarter in a row. The home team locked in the win behind Sibert's 29-point performance. Poythress kept his hot hand going tonight and tallied 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Erie. Off the bench, Terrence Jones racked up 20 points, 11 rebounds and 14 assists, which gave him the rare triple-double on the night.
Tucker ended the night on a high note, notching a new career-high in points scored in a single game with 34. Hartenstein had his fifth double-double in a row as the game ended which consisted of 19 points, 18 rebounds, seven assists and six blocks.
