Vipers Make Roster Moves

EDINBURG, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced today that they have claimed guard Isaiah Taylor off waivers. In addition, the Vipers have acquired the returning player rights to Josh Huestis from the Austin Spurs in exchange for point guard Angel Rodriguez.

Taylor (6-2, 170 lbs.) was previously waived by the Toronto Raptors. In 2017-18, Taylor played for the Atlanta Hawks where he made 67 appearances with nine starts while averaging 6.6 points, 1.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 17.4 minutes of action. He shot 41.8 percent from the field.

While he was with the Hawks, Taylor was assigned to their G League affiliate Erie BayHawks where he appeared in four games averaging 21.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, 10.3 assists in 34.4 minutes of play while shooting 49.3 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc.

During the 2016-17 campaign, Taylor made four appearances for the Houston Rockets but was mainly assigned to the RGV Vipers. With the Vipers, Taylor made 25 appearances, 19 starts, where he averaged 20.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 6.0 assists while shooting 45.7 percent from beyond the arc and 51.5 percent from the field. Furthermore, Taylor started in seven playoff games for RGV as he averaged 16.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game earning the All-Rookie First Team award.

Huestis (6-7, 230 lbs.) appeared in 27 appearances, 22 starts for Austin Spurs during the 2018-19 season where he scored an average of 8.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists per 28.3 minutes played. In addition, Huestis appeared in the Intercontinental Cup with the Spurs where he started in two games, averaging 8.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 3.0 steals.

Prior to Austin, Huestis spent three seasons (2015-18) with the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 2017-18, Huestis earned the most appearances (69, 10 starts) where he averaged 2.3 points and 2.3 rebounds in 14.2 minutes per game.

Huestis was assigned to the G League affiliate of OKC, Oklahoma City Blue, all three seasons where his best season yet was during the 2016-17 campaign. He averaged 14.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.7 blocks while shooting 44.5 percent from the field.

Rodriguez (5-11, 1800 lbs.) has been a key player for the Vipers offense this 2019-20 campaign. He has made 18 starts out of 20 games, averaging 16.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.4 steals in 31.7 minutes of action. Rodriguez has hit 20+ points (29 career-high) seven times this season while racking up 10+ points in eight games as well.

The Vipers will play today their last road game of the decade against Memphis Hustle at 12:00 p.m. CT.
