Portland, ME - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, got balanced scoring and a strong second half to cruise to a 126-115 win over the Delaware Blue Coats on New Year's Eve at the Portland Expo.
Maine (12-6) had seven players in double digits, led by Bryce Brown, who finished with 26 points and 4 rebounds. Carsen Edwards, on assignment from the Boston Celtics, added 23 points on 10-21 shooting in his Expo debut. Two-Way Player Tremont Waters scored 18 points in the win, while Yante Maten added 16. Two-Way Player Tacko Fall recorded his 7th double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Trey Davis scored 11 off the bench in the win.
Delaware (10-8) was led by Marial Shayok with 21 points.
Brown opened the game by draining a three. Edwards buried a pair of jumpers to get going early. Maten's driving dunk got the crowd into the game and gave Maine an 11-5 lead. Edwards and Maten continued to pour it on, and the lead swelled to 9. The Blue Coats would erase the lead, with Haywood Highsmith's free throw cutting it to 24-22. Zhaire Smith's three tied the game at 31. Sheldon Jeter's three gave the Claws a 34-33 lead after 1.
In the 2nd, Jaysean Paige buried an early three. Off a steal, Paige fed Bryce Brown for the slam to put Maine up 39-37. Tacko's block led to a Kaiser Gates three and a 5 point lead. Edwards' three-point play made it 50-43 Claws. Trey Davis hit a corner three late in the quarter, and Maine led 61-55 at the half. The Red Claws shot 59.5% (25-42) from the floor in the first half, and forced Delaware to commit 17 turnovers.
The Red Claws and Blue Coats traded buckets to open the second half. Brown's three point play off of a steal made it 72-64 Claws. Paige got a three to drop, but committed a foul on Smith the other way. Fall rocked the rim to get the crowd into the game, and Brown's 3-point free throw put Maine up 93-83 after 3.
The Red Claws maintained the lead to start the 4th quarter. Gates buried a straight on three, and Waters drained a corner three to make it 102-92. Fall had another big dunk, followed by a Waters lay-up. The Blue Coats would not go away. A 5 point game, Brown buried a three to make it 118-110 lead. Waters' three put the game away for good.
Maine shot 55% (47-85) from the field, 42% (15-36) from three-point range, and 11-19 from the free throw line. Delaware shot 49% (46-94) from the floor, 31% (11-36) from downtown, and 7-8 from the charity stripe.
The Red Claws return to action Friday at home against Agua Caliente.
