Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release
AUSTIN, Texas- Malik Hairston scored 42 points leading a third quarter rally as the Austin Toros defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 120-106 Saturday night at Dodge Arena in the regular season finale. With the win the Toros clinch the fourth seed and home game in this season's D-League playoffs. With the loss the Vipers match last season's record of 21-29.
The Vipers thought they might have had the Toros down and out in the second quarter. The Vipers prompted a Quin Snyder timeout after Trent Strickland's jumper in the lane capped off a 17-4 run that gave the Vipers a 57-46 lead their largest lead of the game at 11 with 3:44 remaining in the half. The Vipers finished the half up 63-56.
Hairston and the Toros rallied back in the third. They closed out the third period on a 20-5 run to take an 87-78 lead going into the final quarter. In the final frame the Toros outscored the Vipers 33-28 and led by as many as 17 to close out their fifth win against the Vipers this season. Hairston scored 25 points after halftime to pace the Toros rally.
Rio Grande Valley had five players in double-figures and had their bench outscore Austin's 46-2 but just didn't get enough scoring from their starters or in all in the second half to keep pace with Austin's torrid second half pace. Jared Jordan's 20 points led the Viper effort; he also dished out 10 assists for his 12th double-double of the season. Cliff Clinkscales also dished out 10 assists as he posted 12 points as well for his first double-double as a Viper. Trent Strickland and Ernest Scott each added 19 points and Julian Sensely scored 13 to round out the double-digit scorers for the Vipers.
Dwayne Jones led the Toros second straight dominant rebound performance as he posted his 20th double-double of the season with 24 points and a game high 16 rebounds. Ryan Bright was a rebound shy of Austin's second triple-double of the season. Scoring 14 points, distributing a team high 10 assists and hauling in nine boards. Squeaky Johnson also posted another solid night scoring 25 and dishing out nine assists.
The Toros will have to wait until Sunday night to know their first round play-off opponent. The Vipers will now have a full off-season with Clay Moser as their head coach to build for a playoff run in their third season in the D-League
