Idaho Stampede News Release
BOISE, Idaho, April 10, 2009 - The Idaho Stampede defeated the Bakersfield Jam 112-103 in front of a sell out crowd in Boise on Friday night. Lance Allred paced the Stampede with 24 points and Jamaal Tatum scored all 13 of his points in the fourth quarter to lift the Stampede to victory.
In a see-saw battle which featured 14 lead changes and 10 ties, Idaho jumped out to a 28-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Idaho managed to sustain that lead throughout the second quarter until Bakersfield went on a 14-4 run starting with 4:35 remaining. The run was capped by a pair of Mateen Cleaves free throws which gave the Jam a 53-51 advantage with 1.5 seconds left in the half.
Stampede guard Lanny Smith sunk a desperation shot from the opposite side of half court to give the Stampede a 54-53 lead going into the break.
The two teams exchanged the lead nine times in the third quarter. Bakersfield managed to gain an 89-85 advantage going into the final quarter. The Jam's third quarter surge was led by Mateen Cleaves and Justin Reed who combined for 19 points in the quarter.
Idaho went on a 19-4 run in the fourth quarter, benefiting from shooting 56% (9 of 16) from the field and put forth a strong defensive effort to hold the Jam to just 26% (5 of 19) from the field.
"This was a great basketball game with 20 guys playing their hearts off," said Stampede Head Coach Bryan Gates. "I thought our defensive effort for the last six minutes of the game was remarkable."
The Stampede finished with six players scoring in double-figures. Kevin Burleson finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points and dishing out 11 assists. Roberto Bergersen dropped in 14 points while Lanny Smith and Brent Petway added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Bakersfield was led by Trey Johnson and Mateen Cleaves who scored 24 and 22 points respectively. Nick Lewis and Derrick Byars finished with 15 points apiece, while Terrance Thomas came off the bench to score 11 points, in the loss.
