Reno Bighorns News Release

Reno - The Bighorns opened the game in a big way scoring a franchise record for points in a quarter with 45. Despite the opening quarter scoring barrage, the 14ers were able to maintain their focus and close the gap. The Bighorns would eventually pull away again in the fourth quarter putting Colorado away for good, while also setting another franchise record for points in a game, Bighorns 142-126.

The Bighorns opened the game with a scoring explosion for the league-leading 14ers, when they scored a franchise record of 45 first quarter points. The Bighorns shot 61% from the field as they outscored the 14ers 45-25. The Bighorns were led by forward, Rod Benson with 11 points and 6 rebounds, while going 4-4 from the field.

In the second quarter Colorado would manufacture a scoring barrage of their own, when they scored 41 second quarter points to cut the Bighorns lead in half before entering the locker room. The tandem of John Lucas and Sonny Weems scored 32 of the 14ers second quarter points. Weems had 15 points, while Lucas added 17 points off the bench. David Noel scored nine second quarter points to lead the Bighorns into the locker room with 17 first half points. Weems led all scorers in the first half with 21 points as the 14ers trailed the Bighorns 75-66 heading into the half.

In the third quarter, the 14ers continued to chip away at the Bighorns lead, as they were able to get within one point of the Bighorns at the 4:37 mark. That is the closest the 14ers would get to taking the lead the rest of the game. The Bighorns were able to open their lead back up to eight points by the end of the third quarter behind the 10 point effort of Noel.

The eight point lead continued to expand during the fourth, as the Bighorns set another franchise record of points in a game as they handed the 14ers a 142-126 loss.

The Bighorns scoring was led by Noel with 32 points, along with 11 rebounds and 10 assists, for his second triple-double of the season. The Bighorns had six players in double figures, five of which had twenty or more points. Benson added a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. The 14ers were led by Weems, who had 32 points of his own to share the game high with Noel.

Despite a slow start, the Bighorns ended the season with a .500 record of 25-25. The Bighorns look to take the high note of beating the league leaders into next season as they narrowly missed the playoffs.
