TULSA, OKLAHOMA - The defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers jumped out to 40-23 lead at the end of the first quarter en route to a 117-105 victory over the Tulsa 66ers Sunday at the Tulsa Convention Center,
The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Vipers (2-3).
The Vipers opened the game on a 9-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Antonio Anderson 2:30 into the game. After a timeout, the 66ers (3-4) scored the next six points and kept the game close for the next 5:09, when Larry Owens hit a free throw to pull the 66ers with 21-19. The Vipers, however, outscored the 66ers 19-2 over the final 4:21 of the first quarter.
The Vipers extended their lead to 19 points at 64-45 with 3:36 remaining in the second quarter after Houston Rockets-assignee Patrick Patterson hit a lay-up.
In his first game back in Tulsa after playing for the 66ers last season, Mustafa Shakur hit a lay-up and a free throw at the 6:38 mark of the third quarter to give the Vipers their largest lead to that point at 84-62. Shakur finished with 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Jerel McNeal hit one of two free throws with 1:19 remaining in the third to give the Vipers a 97-73 lead, their largest of the game.
The 66ers opened the fourth on a 18-5 run to climb within 104-93 midway through the quarter, but that's as close as they got.
The Vipers were led in scoring by Stanley Robinson, who finished 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting and five rebounds.
