March 31, 2010 - NBA G League (G League)
Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release
OREM, Utah - Kevin Kruger, scored 14 of his game high 32 points in overtime as the Utah Flash snuck by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in their lone meeting this season 143-137 Tuesday night at the McKay Events Centers. Kruger, the son of former Texas-Pan American Head Coach Lon Kruger, was the difference maker in the second half and extra session to help lead Flash to the victory. The Vipers loss, and Austin's win over Los Angeles Tuesday night keeps the magic number for clinching the Western Conference at one.
The Vipers had a strong first half. The Vipers led in the first quarter by six after Julian Sensley's slam dunk put the Vipers up 20-14 with four minutes remaining in the opening period. The teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the frame with the Vipers leading 29-27 at the end of the first 12 minutes.
The Vipers would run their lead to as many as 11 points in the second quarter. Stanley Asumnu's running lay-up capped off an 11-3 run to give the Vipers the 49-38 lead with 6:31 remaining in the first half. An 8-0 run would pull the Flash back within three and Brian Hamilton's three-pointer capped off a 9-2 run to give Utah a 60-59 lead. The game would end up being tied at 61 at the intermission.
Foul trouble would ultimately do the Vipers in. Three Vipers players fouled out, and foul trouble kept Ernest Scott out for a good portion of the first half. Scott did have a strong end of the game by scoring 12 points after the third quarter.
The third quarter belonged to Utah as they outscored RGV 32-30 in the third period. In the fourth, the Vipers had an opportunity to win the game in regulation. Will Conroy's runner in the lane was too strong sending the game into the extra session. Utah outscored RGV in the extra session 20-14 to earn the victory.
Will Conroy led the Vipers scoring output with 28 points while dishing out a team high 10 assists for his 16th double-double of the season. Julian Sensley earned a double-double as well scoring 27 points with 11 rebounds.
The Vipers will travel to Boise, Idaho on Wednesday where they will face the Idaho Stampede for the first and only time this season. Tip- off is scheduled for 8:00 PM CST.
