Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers evened their record at 13-13 with a 14-4 win over the Schaumburg Flyers Friday night at Foothills Stadium. Calgary took advantage of a big night from Sam Rosario and Nelson Castro, as well as a Carlos Duncan homerun to claim the victory.
Evan Greusel (1-0) earned his first win of the season for the Vipers by pitching six innings, scattering six hits and giving up just three runs. Schaumburg starter Raymond Jenkins (3-1) gave up eight hits and ten runs over three innings to take the loss for the visitors.
Carlos Duncan got things started in the bottom of the first inning when he drilled his third homerun in two games, a two-run shot off Jenkins that put Calgary up 2-0 early.
Schaumburg got one back in the top of the second but Calgary struck for four more in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 lead. Brandon Rogers walked, Jason Colson singled and Drew Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Nelson Castro drove a 3-RBI double off Jenkins that cleared the bases. Castro also came in to score in the inning on a Manabu Kuramochi RBI single.
The Vipers put the game out of reach in the third inning when they once again brought four runs in and made the score 10-1. Calgary sent all nine batters to the plate in the inning.
Rogers, Colson and Miller again loaded the bases setting the table for Sam Rosario who hit a 3-RBI double of his own that cleared the bags. Rosario then stole third and scored on a Castro groundout.
Calgary's middle-infielders had a big night, Castro had four RBI's on the night and Rosario had a double and a triple to go along with five RBI's of his own.
The Flyers scored two in the fourth inning with a Jarrod Patterson RBI groundout and Tim Marks RBI single.
Calgary went up 12-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Rosario's triple scored both Aaron McEachran and Miller.
Schaumburg added one in the top of the seventh before an RBI double by McEachran scored Adam Shorsher and a Miller sacrifice fly scored McEachran to make it 14-4.
Lefty Geoff Freeborn pitched three solid innings in relief for the Vipers on the way to the win.
Calgary and Schaumburg will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 1:05 PM for the second game of the weekend series. Clint Hosford (2-2) will get the start for Calgary against Schaumburg's Blake Williams (1-0).
