Simunic earns career victory no. 700 with 8-3 win over Edmonton

FARGO, N.D. - Managing in his 1143rd professional game, RedHawks skipper Doug Simunic earned his 700th Northern League victory as Fargo-Moorhead came-from-behind for the second straight night to garner an 8-3 win over the Edmonton Cracker-Cats in front of 2,909 at Newman Outdoor Field on Friday.

Things were looking grim from the start as RedHawks starting pitcher Brandon Goltz allowed two runs in the first inning to put Fargo-Moorhead in a crunch, but his offense responded by posting a three-run first inning for a 3-2 lead after one.

Fargo-Moorhead struggled through the next four innings as only one batter reached base. The RedHawks broke free of their struggles in the sixth inning and let the bats fly. With the score tied at three heading into the bottom half of the sixth Ruben Salazar reached on a single but was forced out when Eric Kofler grounded into a double play. Although there were two outs on the board the RedHawks didn't give up and eventually recorded two runs in the inning on four hits including three singles and a double by Kory Wayment.

The 5-3 lead was not good enough for the RedHawks however, as they carried their offensive surge over into the eighth inning. Five consecutive batters reached base on four singles and a walk. Richard Austin reached on a single after Joe Mathis led off the inning with a fly out to center field. Austin advanced to third on a single by Salazar and came home on a wild pitch by Brad Cherry to score the first run of the inning.

Two more runs were scored during the inning to give Fargo-Moorhead a game-ending score of 8-3.

Brian Hewitt earned his first win of the season pitching in relief of Goltz, who pitched 5.0 innings and allowing all three runs the Cracker-Cats scored. Hewitt threw 2.0 innings and didn't allow a hit while striking out one batter in the winning effort.

The RedHawks and Cracker-Cats will face off against on Saturday in Game 3 of their current four-game series. Fargo-Moorhead is scheduled to send Todd George (3-0, 2.89) to the mound to face off against Edmonton's Brad Bissell (2-2, 3.52). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
