Vipers Complete Weekend Sweep of Toros

HIDALGO, TEXAS - adidas Player of the Game Jeff Adrien recorded his sixth double-double in nine games while scoring a career-high and game-high 31 points to go with a career-high 14 rebounds to lead the defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers past the Austin Toros 124-119 Saturday at State Farm Arena in front of a crowd of 5,525.

Adrien hit 12-of-14 shots from the field and 7-of-10 from the line.

The Vipers (11-7) are winners of four in a row while the Toros (7-11) are losers of six-straight.

Near the end of a close first quarter, the Toros pulled to within 27-25 after Aubrey Coleman hit a jumper with 1:09 remaining. The Vipers closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 10 points.

The Vipers led 40-31 after Leo Lyons connected on an alley-oop dunk, but Jerel McNeal hit a pair of free throws, Terrel Harris connected on a dunk and Richard Roby hit a basket to give the Vipers a 46-31 lead. The Vipers built that lead up to 62-41, at which point the Toros responded with a 9-2 run to pull within 64-50. Adrien ended the run with a lay-up.

The Vipers maintained a large lead until late in the game, when the Toros pulled to within 121-117 with 9.3 seconds remaining, but Mustafa Shakur hit a pair of free throws and Adrien hit one more to put the game out of reach.

Shakur and McNeal each finished with 18 points while Roby, Harris and Mouhammad Faye each scored 14 points.

The Toros were led by Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson, who scored a team-high 29 points with eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Coleman finished with 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting.

The Vipers return to action on Monday at 7:15 p.m. at the South Padre Island Convention Centre when they face the Fort Wayne Mad Ants during the NBA Development League Showcase.
