Utah Defeats Reno in Overtime

The Utah Flash (9-7) had the UCCU Events Center alive with the energy of 4,721 fans in tonight's overtime win against the Reno Bighorns (11-8).
Neither team missed a beat from last night's game. The Flash led 22-20 at the end of the first quarter. Ryan Thompson led the Flash with nine points in the first quarter.
The Flash maintained the lead despite the offensive efforts of the Bighorns. The second quarter ended with a score of 52-42, with the Flash outscoring the Bighorns 30-22. Ryan Thompson continued to lead with 14 points, with newly acquired Tony Gaffney following with eight points. A familiar face to the Flash, Ronald Dupree, who helped take the team to the 2008-09 finals, led in rebounds with five. Donald Sloan led the Bighorns with ten points.
The third quarter belonged to the Bighorns who outscored the Flash 25-23, but the Flash still led 75-67. Utah lost the lead once during the third, but quickly regained it, and maintained it through the quarter.
Once again, the fourth quarter played an integral role in the game. The Bighorns took a three-point lead with less than two minutes to play, but Andre Ingram responded with a three pointer to tie the game. At the end of regulation, the score was tied at 93 as the game went into overtime.
The Flash outscored the Bighorns 8-7 in a thrilling overtime period. Brandon Costner led the Flash with 19 points and Gaffney led in rebounds with 10. The Bighorns were led by DJ Strawberry with 27 points. Patrick Ewing, Jr. led in rebounds with 15.
The Flash, who have experienced a recent shift in their team dynamic, harmonized well tonight. Newly acquired players Tony Gaffney and Dupree both scored in the double digits, 11 and 18, respectively. Gaffney also had a double-double with 10 rebounds in addition to his 11 points.
The Flash will be on the road until Jan. 14, 2011, when then return to play the Idaho Stampede at home. The game begins at 7 p.m. at the UCCU Events Center in Orem, Utah. Tickets are available by calling (801) 434-HOOP (4667).
