Victoria Seals Clipped By The Capitals

June 17, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Victoria Seals News Release

Hoping to salvage the final game of their Alberta road trip, the Victoria Seals wrapped up a three-game series against the Edmonton Capitals on Wednesday night. Turning to right-hander Anthony Pluta (0-0) for the start, the Seals matched up against undefeated Clint Nageotte (3-0) in game three at Telus Field.

For the second straight night the Capitals jumped on the board in the bottom of the first frame, using a string of three consecutive singles from Tom Collaro, Cliff Brumbaugh and Matt Rogelstad to build an early 2-0 advantage.

Answering with a run of their own in the top of the second, the Seals cut Edmonton's lead in half with a lead-off walk to Colin Moro who advanced on a single from Matt Kavanaugh and later scored with the help of an error to Capitals third basemen Brumbaugh.

Taking their first lead of the game in the top half of the third, the Seals got a lead-off base hit from Pluta that was followed by a sacrifice fly courtesy of Terrence McClain. The next Victoria batter, Colin Moro, then drove in the go-ahead run with a base hit for a 3-2 Seals lead.

Evening the game in the bottom half of that same inning, the Capitals converted a one-out double from Collaro with the help of an RBI groundout from Rogelstad. Edmonton would then re-establish their lead when Ryan Stevenson picked up a double in the bottom of the fourth, and later cashed in on a base hit from Steve Brown.

Trailing 4-3 into the sixth inning, the Seals rallied to tie the game once more when back-to-back singles from Moro and Kavanaugh led off the inning before Shane Cronin knotted the score with an RBI groundout.

Not to be outdone, Edmonton bounced right back and grabbed the lead for the final time in the bottom of inning number six, capitalizing on a double from Stevenson when Larry Bigbie drove a sacrifice fly to right field to put the home side up 5-4.

Failing to stage a comeback against Capitals closer Chad Blackwell for a third straight night, the Seals were swept out of Telus Field with a 5-4 loss in the series finale. Winning just one of five games on the road trip, Victoria lost four contests by a combined total of five runs while in Alberta.

Mike Hrynio picks up his first win of the season in relief for the Capitals, while Aaron Easton took the loss to fall to 2-2 on the season. Ryan Stevenson's 4-for-4 outing paced the way for Edmonton, while Matt Kavanaugh stayed red hot with two hits in a losing effort for the Seals.
