June 17, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Chico Outlaws News Release

(Yuma, AZ. June 17th, 2010) The Chico Outlaws got yet another dominant performance from right hander Kris Honel on Thursday night at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, beating the Yuma Scorpions 8-1 to take two of three games and the series win.

Honel, who improved to 5-0 with the win, went seven and a third strong innings, giving up just one unearned run on two hits before making way for the Outlaws bullpen. Honel becomes the first GBL pitcher to reach the five win plateau in 2010.

The Outlaws got a run in the first when JJ Sherrill doubled and was singled in by Mikael Jova to make the score 1-0.

The answer came in the bottom of the third inning for Yuma when pitcher Bill Pulsipher followed a Matt Ceriani single with a ground ball to third. Outlaws third baseman Ismael Castro threw to first, but second baseman Bobby Hill, who was covering first base on the play, lost the ball in the sun and it flew to the fence. Ceriani attempted to come home on the play, but right fielder Jova threw him out at home plate to preserve the 1-0 lead. That was short-lived however as Peeter Ramos singled in Pulshipher to tie it up at 1-1.

Yuma leftie Bill Pulsipher gave seven and two-thirds innings of work, allowing four earned runs on seven hits. Pulsipher had given up just one run before he found trouble in the Outlaws eighth, when three runs came in. With one out, Honel beat out an infield single. Center fielder Blake Gailen then hit a single to center, extending his hit streak to ten games. One batter later, Sherrill got his third hit of the night to score Honel. Jova then smacked a two-RBI double off Scorpions reliever Jordan Muir to make things 4-1 Chico.

In the ninth, the Outlaws got four more runs. Castro hit a double to lead off, setting the stage for John Urick. The first baseman crushed a ball over the right field fence for a two-run blast, his fourth of the year. Shortstop Alex Prieto then hit a ground rule double over the left field wall to end the night for Muir. Marcel Prado came out of the bullpen for the Scorpions and hit pinch-hitter Rich Janeway with a pitch. One batter later, Bobby Hill grounded out to short, scoring Prieto. Sherrill then got his fourth hit of the night, an RBI single to score Janeway to tally the Outlaws final run of the night.

Scorpions manager Daryl Brinkley was ejected in the eighth inning after pinch-hitter Ron Perodin was called out at first base on a close play. Brinkley had to be restrained by one of the other umpires as the confrontation became quite vocal and Brinkley was not happy with the call or the ejection.

Josh Dew and Matt Perisho pitched in relief for the Outlaws to finish the game for Honel, with neither allowing a run.

With the win, Chico is now 18-5 and in first place in the GBL North. Yuma falls to 15-9 on the year.

The Outlaws play Friday - Sunday in Tucson at Hi Corbett Field against the Toros in a three-game set. Rightie Garret Holleran starts for Chico opposite left-hander Albie Lopez for the Toros. Game time is 7:00 pm.
