Chico Outlaws News Release

The Chico Outlaws pounded out a season-high 21 hits enroute to a 14-3 victory over the top team in the GBL South Division on Wednesday night in Yuma. Mark McLemore (2-1) got the start for the Outlaws, going five innings and not allowing a run. Only three Scorpions got hits off McLemore and Yuma finished with just six hits on the night.

Chico got the leadoff runner aboard in eight of the nine innings and every starter in the lineup had a hit except for one.

The Outlaws scored one run each in the first and seventh innings, ans scored three runs each in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings.

In the first, Chico's run came after JJ Sherrill hit a double and was singled home by Mikeal Jova for the games first run off Yuma starter Zach Cline (1-1).

Three runs came in in the third, started off by second baseman Bobby Hill being hit by a Cline fastball in the ribs. Sherrill then hit a hard ball to third, where Scorpions third baseman Santo De Leon had a tough play to make. Sherrill was safe at first on an infield single, but De Leon's wild throw allowed Hill to advance to third and Sherrill to second base. Jova then punched a two-RBI single in to right to score both runners, making it 3-0 Chico. One batter later, third baseman Ismael Castro hit a sac fly to score Jova and the score was 4-0.

Eight more Outlaws batted in the fifth frame, three of them scoring. Castro was hit by a pitch and one batter later, scored on a sac fly by shortstop Alex Prieto. Yuma reliever Matt Stone then walked McLemore, bringing up the top of the order and 2009 GBL All-Star Blake Gailen, who singled. Hill then cashed in both runs with an RBI double to make the score 7-0 in favor of the Outlaws.

The sixth inning saw three additional runs come in. Catcher Mike Rose walked and Castro doubled to lead off the inning. First baseman John Urick, who went 3 for 4 in the game, smacked a double of his own to drive in Rose and Castro. McLemore then grounded into a 4-3 putout, scoring Urick and it was 10-0 Outlaws.

Yuma did its only damage in the bottom of the sixth inning off Outlaws' reliever Rusty Jones. Center fielder Ron Perodin walked and went to second on a Peeter Ramos single. Tim Rodridguez then belted a three-run shot over the fence to make the score 10-3 at that point.

Chico tallied four more runs over the last three innings to make the final score 14-3.

With the win, the Outlaws improved to 17-5 on the year, while Yuma fell to 15-8.

Game three of the series and the rubber match between the two teams is set for Thursday night at 6:30 pm at Desert Sun Stadium. Right Kris Honel goes for Chico looking for his league-leading fifth win of the year, while the Scorpions counter with ex-big leaguer Bill Pulsipher.
