Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

BURLINGTON - The Tri-City ValleyCats (29-25) allowed six unanswered runs in the final six frames to give the Vermont Lake Monsters (20-34) a 6-3 win Friday night at Centennial Field. The victory snaps an 11 game losing streak for Vermont, who had lost 17 of their last 19 contests. Lowell and Connecticut also lost Friday, so the ValleyCats remain two games out of first place in the Stedler Division.

Pitching stood above all else in the comeback victory for Vermont. Tri-City got a stellar outing from starting pitcher Tyler Britton, who allowed just three baserunners in the first three frames, striking out six Lake Monsters. Vermont used just two pitchers, and reliever Xavier Altamirano (3-2) allowed only three hits in his five innings of work, striking out six as well.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED: Brauly Mejia's two RBI double highlighted a three run third frame for the 'Cats. Mejia was slow to get up following his two-bagger, and was later pinch run for after his base hit in the sixth.

In the bottom of the fourth, Steven Pallares drew a bases loaded walk to help plate Vermont's first run of the game. Making his ValleyCats debut, Salvador Montaî=B1o struck out the next man, Robert Bennie, with the bases still loaded to end the inning and the scoring threat. Montaî=B1o finished allowing two runs in two innings, striking out four and walking five.

Vermont's shortstop Eli White led off the bottom of the seventh with a base hit, and centerfielder Marcos Almonte misplayed the ball, allowing White to advance to third base on the error. Tyler Ramirez followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring White and tying the game at three runs apiece.

BIRTHDAY BLUES: 'Cats righty Kevin Hill (1-3) suffered both his third loss of the season and his first blown save on his 24th birthday. Hill gave up four runs (three earned) in the final three innings, striking out three batters.

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS: In the top of the third inning, second baseman Rodrigo Ayarza reached base on a catcher's interference, the first time either team has been involved in such a play this season.

WHAT'S NEXT: Game two between the two squads is tomorrow night, August 13, with southpaw Ryan Hartman (2-0, 3.25) on the hill for the ValleyCats. For Vermont, 2016 first round pick A.J. Puk (0-2, 3.31) will make his seventh start. The 'Cats will play in game three in Burlington Sunday, before an off-day Monday and the New York-Penn League All-Star Game Tuesday, August 16.
