Brooklyn Makes It Four In A Row With 7-4 Win

BROOKLYN, NY - The Cyclones completed a three-game sweep of the Vermont Lake Monsters on Thursday evening thanks a 7-4 win. With the victory, Brooklyn improved to 27-24 on the season and find themselves right in the thick of the playoff race with just three games to go until the All-Star Break. Jose Reyes went 0-1 with a pair of walks, two stolen bases and a run scored in his rehab appearance with Brooklyn.

The Cyclones wasted a pair of scoring opportunities in the first and second innings, getting runners to third with one out in both frames, but failed to score on both occasions. But in the bottom of the third Brooklyn was finally able to take advantage, capitalizing when Vermont starter Dakota Chalmers lost track of the strike zone. The righthander, who walked seven batters over his 4.2 innings on the mound, walked Jose Reyes to start the frame. The rehabbing star promptly stole second and advance to third on a bunt base hit from Gene Cone. After Colby Woodmansee struck out, Brandon Brosher was plunked by a pitch to load the bases. Nick Sergakis followed with a four pitch walk, allowing Reyes to trot home with the game's first run and Blake Tiberi followed with a sac fly to push the Cyclones advantage to 2-0.

Cyclones starter Justin Dunn had another impressive outing for Brooklyn, tossing 3.0 shutout frames, walking three and striking out a season-high six batters before departing after his regularly scheduled innings limit. He handed the ball over to Raul Jacobson who quickly ran into trouble. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for the LakeMonsters with one out in the top of the fourth. But Jacobson was able to bear down and limit the damage to an RBI groundout from Brett Sunde that trimmed the Brooklyn lead to 2-1.

It stayed that way until the top of the seventh when the LakeMonsters would draw even, again on an RBI ground out, this time from Eli White that knotted things up and 2-2 and put an end to Jacobson's night.

Brooklyn quickly broke the tie though, and did so without benefit of a base hit. Four walks, culminating with a bases loaded free pass issued to Arnaldo Berrios pushed home the go-ahead run for Brooklyn. Hengelbert Rojas, who came into the night without an RBI dating back to June 25th, followed with a two-RBI single that pushed the Brooklyn advantage to 5-2.

But Vermont bounced right back, loading the bases thanks to a walk and back-to-back singles off of Brooklyn reliever Alejandro Castro with nobody out. Joe Zanghi was summoned from the bullpen and after a pair of sacrifice flies and a strikeout, the Cyclones were found themselves hanging on to a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the frame though, the Cyclones came out swinging and padded their advantage. Nick Sergakis, who reached base five times on the night, was hit by a pitch with two outs to start the threat and quickly came around to score on Blake Tiberi's RBI double. Darryl Knight followed with an RBI single and the Cyclones added a pair of insurance runs, making it 7-4.

That would be how it would end, as Zanghi tossed a scoreless ninth to collect his fourth save of the season.

The Cyclones will now open a three-game series with the West Virginia Black Bears on Friday evening at 7:00 PM. It will be Military Appreciation Night at the ballpark at the first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive Cyclones Aviator Sunglasses. Military Members will also be able to receive free tickets for the game by showing active or retired military ID.
