Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Hudson Valley Renegades stranded 11 men on base while losing 1-0 Thursday night to the Williamsport Crosscutters in game one of a scheduled doubleheader that was delayed over three-and-a-half hours due to rain. Game two was suspended in the sixth inning with Hudson Valley and Williamsport tied 2-2. The game will not be completed.

The Renegades squandered several chances to score through most of game one In the first, they had runners at first and second with one out after three straight walks and a caught stealing started the game. However, third baseman Jim Haley and first baseman Nate Lowe each grounded into fielder's choices to get the Crosscutters out of the inning.

In the second, Hudson Valley had runners at second and third with two out before centerfielder Jake Fraley popped to third to end the threat. The Renegades got runners to second and third with one out in the fourth only to see catcher Danny De La Calle and right fielder Angel Perez strike out. In the fifth, the Renegades would load the bases with two out before shortstop Jon Popadics grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

However, inning number six was Hudson Valley's best chance to score. Second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni led off the inning with a double, then moved to third on a passed ball. De La Calle struck out before Perez grounded a ball to the mound. Crosscutters relief pitcher Will Hibbs checked Mastrobuoni at third, but his throw to first pulled first baseman Brett Barbier off the bag. Mastrobuoni stayed put on the play and Hudson Valley had runners at the corners with one out. From there, Fraley grounded into a fielder's choice to first as Barbier fired to the plate to retire Mastrobuoni while Perez went to second. The inning would end when designated Garrett Whitley grounded into another fielder's choice to third.

All of those missed opportunities would come back to haunt Hudson Valley in the bottom of the sixth. Centerfielder Henry Lartigue started the inning for Williamsport by doubling to center. After a sac bunt moved him to third, Barbier singled Lartigue home to break the scoreless deadlock.

Hudson Valley was retired in order in the seventh inning to end the game.

Getting the win for Williamsport in relief was Hibbs (3-1) who tossed 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out two. The loss for Hudson Valley went to reliever Jose Alonzo (1-3) who allowed the game-winning run on two hits in his only inning of work while striking out two.

Each team had six hits in game one, however no one for the Renegades had more than one base hit. Lartigue went 2-3 with a double and run scored to lead Williamsport.

In game two, Williamsport broke out on top in the second thanks to third baseman Lucas Williams and some sloppy Hudson Valley defense. Williams led off the inning with a bunt single then stole second. The throw to second from catcher Chris Betts went into centerfield allowing Williams to go to third. On the play, Hudson Valley centerfielder Jake Fraley's throw to third was airmailed, which brought Williams in to score.

The Renegades came back in the third to take the lead. With two out and no one on, Fraley reached on an infield single to third. Right fielder Angel Perez followed that with a single of his own to put runners at the corners with two out. With leftfielder Ryan Boldt batting, Perez stole second setting the stage for Boldt's two-run double to center to give Hudson Valley a 2-1 lead.

The Crosscutters came back to tie the game in the fifth. Shortstop Chandler Hall singled to center and went to second on a fielding error by Fraley to start the inning. It was Fraley's second error of the game. After a groundout moved him to third, Hall would score on a sac fly to right by second baseman Evan Rodgers to tie the game at two.

Had the Renegades held that inning, they would have won. That's because the game would have been official and play was suspended just before the top of the sixth due to rain. After about a 30-minute delay, play was finally suspended a 1 a.m. Because the teams don't play each other again this season, the game will not be completed. The game will not count in the standings, however the statistics from the contest will.

Both starters went a full five innings in game two.. Renegades starter Noel Rodriguez allowed two unearned runs on four hits and struck out four. Crosscutters starter Cole Irvin gave up two earned run on six hits and struck out seven.

The Renegades got six hits in game two including a 2-3 performance from Boldt who also drove in two runs. Williamsport was held to four singles in the second game.

The Renegades now travel to Norwich to play the Connecticut Tigers Friday in game one of a three-game series. Hudson Valley will start right-hander Spencer Moran (2-1, 2.31 ERA) against Connecticut right-hander Alfred Gutierrez (1-3, 2.77 ERA). First-pitch is scheduled for 7:05. The Hudson Valley Renegades will host the 2016 New York-Penn League All-Star Game presented by Marist College on Tuesday, August 16th. First pitch is slated for 7:25 and will be followed by a fireworks show. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
