Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Nick Collins smacked a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie as the Vermont Lake Monsters snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 6-3 New York-Penn League victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats Friday night at historic Centennial Field.

The ValleyCats took an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the third, including a Brauley Mejia two-run double, but the Lake Monsters scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to tie the game 3-3. A Steven Pallares bases loaded walked forced home Vermont's first run before Pallares added an RBI single in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2. Tyler Ramirez tied the game in the seventh with a sacrifice fly scoring Eli White, who had singled to leadoff the inning and advanced to third on a fielding error.

Brett Sunde led off the eighth with a single and Nate Mondou put runners on first and second with two outs bring Collins, who had doubled earlier in the game, to the plate. On a 1-2 pitch, Collins drilled the two-run double to right-centerfield giving the Lake Monsters a 5-3 lead. Collins scored Vermont's sixth run on back-to-back wild pitches.

Vermont starter Brandon Bailey allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits over the first four innings before giving way in the fifth to Xavier Altamirano, who would give up just three hits and strikeout six over the final five innings. After giving up a leadoff single and two-out single in the sixth inning, Altamirano (3-2) retired the final 10 ValleyCat batters of the game (six by strikeout).

Mondou and White each collected two hits for Vermont (20-34), which won its first game since July 31st. The rally from a 3-0 deficit also marked the Lake Monsters biggest come-from-behind win of the season (had rallied from two-run deficits three times this season).

Tri-City reliever Kevin Hill (1-3) was charged with four runs (three earned) on six hits with three walks over the final three innings to take the loss. ValleyCat starter Tyler Britton had given up just two hits with six strikeouts before coming out of the game after just three innings. Mejia was 2-for-3 with the two-run double, while Tyler Wolfe 2-for-3 with an RBI single for Tri-City (29-25).

The Lake Monsters and ValleyCats will meet in the second of the three-game series at Centennial on Saturday beginning at 6:05 pm. It will be both the rescheduled Star Wars Night from earlier in the summer and Vermont Comic Con Night along with a post-game fireworks show.
