Game 1
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Black Bears' starter RHP Stephan Meyer, backed by 16 hits, kept the Spikes' offense off-balance as West Virginia defeated State College 7-4 on Tuesday night from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Meyer improved to 2-4 allowing just one earned run over six innings with two strikeouts. West Virginia's offense got off to a quick start with seven hits over the first three innings against State College starter RHP Steven Farinaro. In the first inning, Black Bears' 3B Will Craig, who doubled with two outs to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, came in to score on RF Kevin Krause's RBI single which gave West Virginia a 1-0 lead. Just one inning later, the Black Bears doubled their advantage to 2-0 on an RBI single from SS Stephen Alemais. In the third, a two RBI triple to centerfield off the bat of CF Sandy Santos provided West Virginia with a 4-0 lead. In the fifth inning, the Black Bears would pull away as an RBI sacrifice fly from C Arden Pabst put West Virginia ahead, 5-0. But, State College responded as an RBI double from 2B Yariel Gonzalez cut the Spikes' deficit to 5-1. West Virginia increased their advantage to 7-1 in the eighth on an RBI groundout from Krause and 1B Albert Baur's RBI single. State College, though, would threaten in the ninth. The Spikes loaded the bases and brought the tying run to the plate after 1B Elier Rodriguez scored on a West Virginia error, a passed ball allowed another run to cross the plate and an RBI sacrifice fly from Gonzalez made the score 7-4. Spikes' SS Tommy Edman paced the offense going 3-for-3 with a run scored along with two walks as Farinaro dropped to 6-1, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits through 5.2 innings. For the Black Bears, Baur and Alemais paced the offense with three hits each as West Virginia outhit the Spikes 16-10.
Game 2
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Black Bears' starter RHP Danny Beddes allowed just one hit over six innings as West Virginia cruised by State College 8-4. The 2016 New York-Penn League All-Star improved to 4-2, allowing just two earned runs over six innings with five strikeouts. West Virginia got on the scoreboard in the first inning against State College starter RHP Bryan Dobzanski. A solo shot over the left field wall from SS Stephen Alemais, his first professional home run, gave the Black Bears a 1-0 lead. Play on Wednesday evening would eventually be suspended in the bottom of the first inning due to rain. The Black Bears picked up right where they left off in the second inning on Thursday afternoon. West Virginia began the scoring on an RBI double from LF Hunter Owen. Then, RBI walks to 2B Kevin Mahala, SS Stephen Alemais and 3B Will Craig along with an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of RF Kevin Krause put the Black Bears ahead, 6-0. Just one inning later, Alemais, who led off the frame with a single, came in to score on a Spikes' error, providing West Virginia with a 7-0 advantage. But, State College would respond in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run from 1B Ryan McCarvel, cutting the Spikes' deficit to 7-2. Reliever RHP Neil Kozikowski entered in the seventh inning for Beddes and allowed an earned run in the frame as C Riley Drongeson doubled and came across to score on a wild pitch, making the score 7-3. In the next inning, an RBI sacrifice fly by 2B Andy Young pulled the Spikes within three runs, 7-4. In the ninth inning, West Virginia would tack on another run on a solo home run from DH Ty Moore; his first long ball of the year allowed West Virginia to pull away, 8-4. For the Black Bears, Moore guided the offense going 3-for-5 with two runs scored as West Virginia outhit State College 10-4. McCarvel went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI as Dobzanski took the loss allowing one earned run in the first inning of play.
Game 3
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - West Virginia received an excellent outing from starter RHP Matt Anderson who took a no-decision, tossing three scoreless innings with four strikeouts but the Black Bears were defeated by the State College Spikes 7-4 in the second game of the doubleheader on Thursday night from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Reliever RHP Scooter Hightower took the loss allowing one earned run over .2 innings on three hits. After both teams were held scoreless for the first three innings, a two RBI single from 1B Elier Rodriguez in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Spikes a 2-0 lead. Just one inning later, a two RBI triple from 2B Andy Young and an RBI sacrifice fly from CF Vince Jackson gave the Spikes a 5-0 advantage. But, West Virginia would respond in the sixth after a brief rain delay with five hits in a row. An RBI single from 1B Albert Baur and a three RBI triple from CF Sandy Santos cut the score to 5-4. State College responded in the bottom of the frame on LF Mick Fennell's RBI groundout and an RBI single from SS Tommy Edman, putting the Spikes ahead 7-4. DH Kevin Krause and Santos had two hits each to pace the offense, which was outhit by State College 10-8. For State College, Young went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored as reliever RHP Gerwuins Velazco improved to 2-0 throwing the fifth inning scoreless. The Black Bears (24-29) and Brooklyn Cyclones (28-25) will open a three-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 PM from MCU Park.
