Pitching Carries Scrappers Past Crosscutters

Niles, OH-Three Mahoning Valley Scrappers pitchers combined to two hit the Williamsport Crosscutters on Friday night at Eastwood Field. The Scrappers narrowly missed throwing the franchise's first home no-hitter, but did top the Crosscutters 4-2 to move within 4.5 games of the Wild Card.

Aaron Civale would get the start for the Scrappers and would twirl three no hit innings. Civale allowed an unearned run in the first The Scrappers would also get an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Gabriel Mejia singled to start the inning before moving to second on a throwing error by Crosscutters pitcher JoJo Romero on a pickoff throw. After moving to third on a groundout, Mejia would score to tie the game on a wild pitch.

In the top bottom of the second innings the Scrappers would take the lead for good. Gavin Collins walked to start the inning. With two outs, Nate Winfrey would connect on a two run homerun, his second of the season, to put the Scrappers up 3-1.

Ben Krauth would take over for Civale in the top of the fourth inning and picked up where he left off. Krauth would sail through four innings, three times retiring the side in order and walking just one.

The Scrappers added an insurance run in the fourth inning before Williamsport would break up the no hitter in the top of the eighth inning off of Scrappers reliever Michael Letkewicz. Chandler Hall started the inning with a double off the base of the wall in leftfield. Hall would then score on a sacrifice fly from Evan Rogers to pull the score to the final of 4-2.

Civale took a no decision in 3.0 innings of work. He allowed one unearned run on no hits while striking out two. Krauth (1-0) earned the win in 4.0 innings of relief. He allowed one walk and struck out six. Letkewicz (2) picked up the save in 2.0 innings of work. He allowed two hits and one earned run. He did not record a walk or a strikeout.

The Scrappers (25-27) and Crosscutters (30-23) continue their series on Saturday night at 7:05. All-Star Tanner Tully will start for the Scrappers. Saturday is a bobblehead night!
