Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs are proud to announce that forward Carter Verhaeghe has been named the seventh captain in Niagara IceDogs history.

Verhaeghe is in his fourth season with the team after being drafted in the second round, 38th overall, by the IceDogs in the 2011 OHL Priority Selection. He has 184 points in 233 career OHL games and was selected in the third round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He currently leads the team in goals with 18 and is second in points with 42.

He takes over the captaincy from five year IceDog Luke Mercer, who had his season and OHL career cut short by an injury but remains with the team as an assistant coach and statistician.

A native of Waterdown, Ontario, Verhaeghe has served as an assistant captain since the 2013-14 season. He joins the illustrious company of Michael Swift, Alex Pietrangelo, Andrew Agozzino, Ryan Strome, Jesse Graham and Mercer, who all have served as captain of the Niagara IceDogs.

The IceDogs would like to congratulate Carter on this honour and we look forward to seeing him in action with the 'C' for the first time when the IceDogs host the Mississauga Steelheads on Tuesday night!
