Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - The Canadian Championship run for Vancouver Whitecaps FC came to an end on Wednesday night at BC Place after falling 2-1 to Cavalry FC of the Canadian Premier League.
As July winds down, the 'Caps kicked off their sixth match this month in all competitions and head coach Marc Dos Santos started a 4-3-3 formation with Doneil Henry wearing the captain's armband for the first time. Jake Nerwinski, Hwang, Lass Bangoura, and Theo Bair were the four changes in the starting XI from when these two teams met on July 10 in Calgary.
Both teams started strong but Cavalry FC opened the scoring in the seventh minute as Brown slipped in behind the 'Caps line and found the back of the net.
The 'Caps almost had a goal of their own just five minutes later when the team earned a corner kick that found Erik Godoy at the back post, but the centre back just couldn't angle his effort on target.
After holding over 65 percent of the possession in the first half, the 'Caps came close to another goal off a second corner, this time finding Andy Rose in the box that just missed his header over the net, finishing the first half 1-0 for the visitors.
JoaquÃn Ardaiz came into the match at halftime and instantly made an impact in the opening minutes with a cross to Bair in the box that was snagged by goalkeeper Marco Carducci.
The 'Caps got on the board in the 67th minute from Hwang, who took a strike from the top of the box and found the top left corner, just out of the reach of Carducci. Ali Adnan started the play with a long ball from the 'Caps own 18-yard line that was chased down by Bair who dribbled it into the box and took a shot that got blocked right back to Hwang, tying it all up at 1-1.
Cavalry got a second goal to retake the lead in the 72nd minute off of a corner that found the head of Zator in the box.
The 'Caps had one more chance just four minutes later when Yordy Reyna challenged Carducci on a pass-back and won the ball from the keeper, but hit the outside of the net on a tight angle, as the Cavs would take the match 2-1.
Whitecaps FC embark on a three game road trip starting at Allianz Field to take on Minnesota United FC on Saturday, July 27. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. PT live on TSN 2 and 1410 AM. The following Saturday, August 3, the team visits FC Cincinnati at Nippert Stadium.
