BBVA Stadium to Host Leagues Cup Semifinal Between Club America & Tigres UANL August 20
July 25, 2019 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON - BBVA Stadium will play host to two of Mexico's most successful and most popular clubs on Tuesday, August 20 when powerhouses Club América and Tigres UANL square off in the semifinals of the inaugural Leagues Cup.
Tickets for the match will go on sale to the general public on Friday, July 26 at Noon CDT, with prices starting at $20. Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash Season Ticket Members will have access to an exclusive presale opportunity discounted ticket pricing beginning this afternoon.
Club América advanced to the semifinal with a 6-5 penalty shootout victory over the Houston Dynamo Wednesday evening at BBVA Stadium after the teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation. América forward Nicolás Benedetti put the visitors ahead in the 73rd minute before Houston equalized through U.S. soccer legend DaMarcus Beasley in the 85th. Mexican national team star Giovani dos Santos, newly signed to Las Aguilas, converted the winning penalty in the seventh round.
Later Wednesday night, Tigres downed a determined Real Salt Lake side 1-0 thanks to a goal from star striker Eduardo Vargas in the 57th minute. Although Tigres dominated in possession and shots, Salt Lake held firm defensively throughout the first half and it ultimately took a deflected shot by Vargas to beat RSL 'keeper Nick Rimando for the game's only goal.
The semifinal matchup will pit two of Mexico's most successful clubs, both historically and recently. Club América have won a record 13 domestic titles, including the 2018 Apertura (fall) season championship. Tigres have captured seven LigaMX titles, four of which have come in the last four years, including the 2019 Clausura (spring) season championship.
The winner of the semifinal match will advance to the Leagues Cup Final, to be played on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.
