Vancouver Canadians News Release
(County Stadium - Yakima, WA) - The Canadians had three different leads on Friday night but a resilient Yakima Bears offense got the last laugh handing Vancouver a 5-4 loss to extend the C's losing streak to six games away from Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.
The Canadians opened the scoring on Friday with a pair of runs in the top of the 1st inning. CF Jon Jones would lead the game off with a single to left field off of starter RHP Alex Capaul before eventually coming around to score on a single off the bat of RF Nick Baligod. Baligod would come around to count seconds later when DH Garrett Maines smacked his 3rd double of the season to help Vancouver to a 2-0 lead.
After Yakima's RF Justin Hilt hit his 8th home run of the summer, the Canadians regained a two-run lead in the top of the 3rd inning when SS Shane Opitz would reach on a fielding error and score on a double from RF Nick Baligod.
The Bears would grab a run in both the bottom of the 4th and 5th inning to tie the game at 3-3 before Vancouver grabbed their third lead of the night in the top of the 6th inning. DH Garrett Maines would lead off with a walk before scoring from first base with two outs in the frame as a flyball off the bat of LF Yeico Aponte was dropped by CF Westley Moss allowing the Canadians to take a 4-3 lead.
With the Canadians feeling like they had finally positioned themselves to snap a five-game losing streak, Yakima RF Justin Hilt hit a deep fly ball off the center field wall in the bottom of the 6th inning that bounced far from CF Jon Jones. By the time the C's center field got the ball and fired it back toward the infield, Hilt had scored on an inside-the-park home run to tie the game at 4-4.
The Bears would grab their first lead of the night in the bottom of the 7th inning when CF Westley Moss would single off of Canadians reliever RHP Travis Garrett, who then uncorked a wild pitch allowing Moss to reach second base. From there, DH Matt Jensen would hit an infield single advancing Moss to third base before he would score on a single off the bat of 1B Jimmy Comerota helping the Bears to a 5-4 lead.
The Canadians would go 3-for-24 over the final six innings as the Yakima bullpen slammed the door holding on for a 5-4 win.
With the loss, Vancouver drops to 5-12 (.294) on the season and remain five games back of the West Division leading Aquasox who fell to Tri-City on Friday night in Everett, WA.
