Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

Burlington, VT- The Tri-City ValleyCats came within one out of suffering their worst loss of the season. A five run ninth inning gave the ValleyCats a respectable 10-6 loss to the Vermont Expos. The last minute outburst masked a night of poor pitching for Tri-City.

Evan Englebrook started the ValleyCats and struggled early. Englebrook, whose start was delayed a few days by a tendon injury, lasted only two and two-thirds innings after going two innings in his last start in Mahoning Valley. Englebrook gave up a solo home run in the second inning to Luke Montz and struggled mightily in the third inning.

Englebrook gave up three straight hits in the third inning. He uncorked two wild pitches and a past ball. By the time Bo Edmiston came in to relieve Englebrook five runs had scored. Edmiston came in and got Steve Mortimer to fly out on one pitch to get out of the inning.

In the fourth inning, Edmiston yielded a solo home run to John Poppert. Marvin Lowrance led off the fifth inning with a single and Doug Vroman responded by smacking a two-run home run over the left-field wall.

Edmiston pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up and pair of runs and Anthony DeWitt yielded two runs of his own in his two innings of work.

The ValleyCats scored their lone run of the game in the second inning, Hunter Pence walked and went to second when Francisco Caraballo singled. Brady Koch, who got the start as the designated hitter, smacked an RBI single to right field. The game was tied at 1-1.

Clyde Jenkins pitched the first six innings for Vermont and did very well. He gave up just one run on three hits in those six innings. Eddie Diaz pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning.

Tri-City gave him some trouble in the ninth. Ben Zobrist and Kevin Vital walked. Then Hunter Pence smacked a low changeup and "golfed" the ball over the wall in left centerfield. Expos manager Jose Alguacil lifted him in favor of Isaiah Wright.

Wright came in with an ERA of around nine and last pitched against the ValleyCats on August 2. He gave up five runs in one-third of an inning. Wright started off fairly decent`. He gave up a walk to Brady Koch, which was sandwiched in between two flyouts.

Wright just could not get the final out. Luke Barganier doubled and sent Koch to third base. Drew Sutton stepped up and had and lashed a two-run single. Wright was taken out of the game and Gus Hlebovy got the final out of the game.

The ValleyCats came within one loss of tying their worst loss of the season. The 'Cats suffered six run loses three times before, (6-0 vs. Brooklyn, 6/25; 7-1 vs. Lowell, 7/11; 10-4 vs. Williamsport, 7/31).

The ValleyCats and Expos play a doubleheader tomorrow. The two games are necessary to make up the rainout on Monday August 16 between the two teams at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. The ValleyCats will be the home team in game one. Game time is set for 6:05 and the game can be heard beginning at 5:45 on AM 1160 WABY and AM 900 WUAM Saratoga Springs as well as on the Internet at sportsjuice.com.
