August 18, 2004 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
New Jersey Cardinals News Release

This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) were swept by the Williamsport Crosscutters (Pittsburgh Pirates) in a doubleheader. The Cardinals dropped to 30-27, while the Crosscutters improved to 26-30. Williamsport has now defeated the Cards 4 consecutive times.

The Crosscutters won game one behind a strong effort from starter Derek Hankins (5-2). The right-hander threw 6.1 innings, allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6. Joe Salas came on in relief to earn his 1st save of the season. Cards pitcher Chris Della Rocco (1-2) took the loss, marking the first time this season the Cards had lost a game started by Della Rocco.

In game two it was much the same story as Williamsports pitching stymied the Cards offense. Steve Herce (1-1) allowed only a solo home run to Levi Webber in his 5 innings of work, while Dustin Craig worked a perfect 7th to pick up his 8th save of the year. Adam Acosta took the loss for the Cards, allowing 4 runs, 2 earned, on 6 hits while striking out 5 in 4.2 innings pitched.

On the night, Webber smacked two home runs, including a laser shot to left field in the 5th inning of game two to break up a no-hitter. He has been one of the Cards hottest hitters of late, swatting all 4 of his home runs in the last 11 games and batting .385 (15-for-39) since August 5.

The Cards and Crosscutters continue their five-game set tomorrow night with another doubleheader set to begin at 6:00 pm. Fridays single game will begin at 7:15. Saturday night, the first-place Brooklyn Cyclones pay a visit to Skylands Park as the Cards try to solidify their hold on a playoff spot. First pitch is set for 5:00 pm. Miller Lite Bat Bonanza, sponosored by Miller Lite and the New Jersey Herald, will be held on Thursday, and Friday night is fireworks night sponsored by Condit Toyota, Toyota Motors USA and The Star Ledger. Saturday, Phils Ford sponsors a baseball giveaway and post-game is Family Catch on the Field.
