New Jersey Cardinals News Release
WEEKLY WRAP-UP: The Cards went 4-1 last week, taking the series finale from Hudson Valley (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) on Thursday, splitting a pair of games with Brooklyn (New York Mets) on Friday and Saturday and then sweeping a doubleheader from Staten Island (New York Yankees) on Sunday before Mondays game was suspended due to fog. They are currently 30-25 on the season and in 2nd place of the McNamara Division of the New York Penn League, 1.0 game behind division leading Brooklyn.
PLAYOFF PUSH: The Cards currently lead the wild card race with Hudson Valley sitting 1.0 game behind the Cards with a 29-26 record; the Cards have 3 games remaining with the Renegades on August 27 through 29. The Cards are just 1.0 game behind first place Brooklyn, which sports a 31-24 record, and have 3 games remaining with the Cyclones on August 21 through 23.
IN A FOG: On Tuesday night, the Cardinals and Staten Island Yankees (New York Yankees) were set to begin the top of the 5th inning when dense fog rolled in to Skylands Park, forcing their game to be suspended with the Cards leading, 4-3. The game is not yet an official contest, so statistics for Tuesday night will not be included in season totals until the game is completed. Prior to the game, torrential rain and hail postponed the first pitch, causing the first home rain delay of the season for the Cardinals. No make up date for the game has been announced. Fans holding tickets to Tuesdays game may exchange their ticket for a seat of similar value to any remaining Cards home game, subject to availability.
BIRDS WITH BATS: The Cardinals are batting .253 as a team, 6th in the league. 2B Chris Patrick, who currently ranks 2nd in the league with a .331 batting average, is batting .376 (32-for-85) since returning to the lineup from injury on July 22. Since August 5, 1B Levi Webber is hitting .382 (13-for-34) with 2 home runs and 8 runs scored in 11 games. Webber and 1B Mike Ferris hit back-to-back home runs on August 14 against Brooklyn, marking the first time this season that two Cardinals have hit back-to-back home runs. OF Wes Swackhamer snapped a 7-game hitting streak on August 14. During the streak, he batted .348 (8-for-23). 3B Jake Mullinax is 5th in the league with 63 hits and 7th with 35 RBI.
CARDINALS HURLERS: The Cardinals pitching staff has a 3.78 team ERA, 8th in the league. The bullpen has not allowed a run in its last 20.0 innings pitched, and since July 13, has pitched to a 1.44 ERA (131.1 IP, 21 ER). RHP Derek Roper won his 6th game of the season, which ranks him 3rd in the league, on August 15 (Game 2) against Staten Island. He pitched 6.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 5. He also ranks 10th in the league with 51 strikeouts. RHP Miguel Aguero continued his stellar pitching this week, making his 4th consecutive quality start on August 13 at Brooklyn. He allowed 3 runs on 8 hits over 6.0 innings to take a no-decision in the Cardinals victory. Over his last 5 appearances, Aguero is 3-1 with a 1.55 ERA (29.0 IP, 5 ER). Aguero is 7th in the league with 53 strikeouts and 3rd with 63.1 innings pitched. RHP Cory Doyne has not allowed a run in his last 9.0 innings pitched, a streak which spans 8 appearances and dates to July 31. His 7 saves place him tied for 6th in the league.
THE WEEK AHEAD: Tonight, New Jersey hosts a doubleheader with Williamsport (Pittsburgh Pirates) beginning at 6:00 pm at Skylands Park. The Daily Record sponsors tonights Dog Dayspromotion. The Cards and Crosscutters continue their five-game set tomorrow night with another doubleheader set to begin at 6:00 pm. Fridays single game will begin at 7:15. Saturday night, the first-place Brooklyn Cyclones pay a visit to Skylands Park as the Cards try to solidify their hold on a playoff spot. First pitch is set for 5:00 pm. Miller Lite Bat Bonanza, sponosored by Miller Lite and the New Jersey Herald, will be held on Thursday, and Friday night is fireworks night sponsored by Condit Toyota, Toyota Motors USA and The Star Ledger. Saturday, Phils Ford sponsors a baseball giveaway and post-game is Family Catch on the Field.
