Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
Burlington, VT- The Expos used three home runs and multi-hit games from six different players as Vermont opened the Centennial Field portion of a five-game series against the Tri-City Valleycats with a 10-6 New York-Penn League victory Wednesday night.
The Expos spotted the ValleyCats a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a one-out walk, single and Brady Koch RBI single off Vermont starter Clyde Jenkins (1-1), who settled down to allow just the one run on three hits over six innings for his first win of the year.
Vermont tied the game in the second on a solo home run from Luke Montz, his second home run in as many games and ninth of the season to tie Trace Coquillette for second on the Expos single-season home run list (Matt Cepicky leads with 12).
The Expos used four hits and a walk to score four runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead and knock Tri-City starter Evan Engelbrook from the game. Jose Contreras and Doug Vroman had RBI singles in the inning, while Marvin Lowrance had an RBI groundout and the other run scored on a passed ball.
John Poppert, who was 3-for-4 with three runs and a double, hit a solo home run in the fourth and Vroman added a two-run homer in the fifth to give Vermont an 8-1 lead. Poppert's home run was his second and Vroman his eighth of the season, while it was just the fourth time in Expos history that Vermont has hit three home runs in a single game at Centennial Field.
Vermont added a couple of more runs in the sixth for a 10-1 lead before Tri-City scored five runs in the ninth inning of Expos relievers Eddie Diaz and Isaiah Wright. Hunter Pence hit a three-run homer, his eighth of the season, with no outs and Drew Sutton had a two-out, two-run single off Wright to cut the Vermont lead to 10-6. Expos closer Gus Hlebovy came on to retire Johnny Ash for the final out of the game.
Lowrance, Vroman, Montz and Brad Ditter each had two hits for the Expos, while Vroman had three RBI and Contreras two runs scored. Luke Barganier went 3-for-4 with a double for Tri-City (34-23), while Engelbrook (2-3) allowed five runs on five hits over 2.2 innings to take the loss.
Vermont (26-28) has now won three straight games for just the second time this season and two straight games over the ValleyCats to move 6.5 games behind first-place Tri-City in the Stedler Division standings.
The Expos and ValleyCats will play a doubleheader at Centennial Field on Thursday night beginning at 6:05 p.m. The first game will be a makeup of Monday night's rainout at Tri-City and both games will be seven-inning games. The five-game series will wrap up on Friday with a single game at 7:05 p.m.
