Tonights win also ended the Cards 3 game losing streak against Hudson Valley. The Cards improved to 33-36 on the season while the Renegades dropped to 29-38.
Zack Zuercher held the Hudson Valley offense in check throwing 7 shut out innings on 4 hits. Zuercher ran into trouble in the 8th putting the first 2 hitters on, but Scott Vander Weg came in and slammed the door shut by getting 2 ground outs and a strike out and then threw a perfect 9th . Zuercher improved to 5-7 with the win and Vander Weg picked up his 4th save of the season. Jacob McGee took the loss for Hudson Valley and fell to 5-4.
The Cardinals got all of the offense they needed in the 5th inning scoring 3 runs. The Jersey Birds manufactured their 1st run of the game with Carlos De La Cruz reaching on an infield single and then stealing 2nd and advancing to 3rd on a throwing error by the catcher and then Craig Newton drove him in with a single to center. Daniel Nelson followed with another single advancing Newton to 3rd and then Donovan Solano singled to left scoring Newton and advancing Nelson to 3rd. The Cards added their 3rd and final run of the night on Chad Gabriels fielders choice ground out.
The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow evening at Skylands as they conclude their 2005 season series against Hudson Valley. The Cards will look to take the rubber game and gain a split for the season series at 6 games apiece. Tomorrow night is the final fireworks show sponsored by Condit World and WSUS radio.
