Cyclones end home schedule with an 8-4 win

Brooklyn, NY - The Cyclones ended their home-schedule with an 8-4 victory over the Staten Island Yankees. Brooklyn finished the season with a 22-16 record at KeySpan Park in front of 8,718 raucous and appreciative fans. Ryan Meyers (1-4) got the win for the Cyclones, pitching five strong innings, allowing one run on five hits, while walking two and striking out one. Nick Evans finished the night a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI to pace the Cyclones offense. Despite the victory, the Cyclones remain 3.5 games behind the Lowell Spinners in the race for the Wild Card.

The Brooklyn hit parade continued on Thursday night, pounding out eight runs on 16 hits against the rival Yankees. The Cyclones notched the first runs on the scoreboard, with two in the second courtesy of a Matt Anderson two-run blast to right. After Staten Island cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the fourth, the ‘Clones responded in the sixth. Continuing to play long ball, three extra base hits resulted in three runs to stretch the lead to 5-1. Caleb Stewart doubled off the left-field wall to start the rally, followed by Nick Evans legging out a triple past a diving right fielder Jose Perez. Jonel Pacheco completed the scoring clearing the left field wall with a two run homer of his own.

Staten Island rallied late with two runs in the top of the eighth, pulling within 5-3. But the Cyclones bats could not be contained, coming through with another three-spot in the bottom half of the inning. Caleb Stewart one again launched the three-run outburst with a single, and scoring on Nick Evans rope double to left. Jonel Pacheco tacked on a single, moving to second on the relay throw and putting runners on second and third. Drew Butera came through with a clutch two-run single scoring both Evans and Pacheco, capping the inning at 8-3. The Yankees threatened, but could only push across a lone run in the ninth, as the Cyclones came out victorious, 8-4.

Brooklyn finishes out their schedule on the road, while gunning for a wild-card playoff berth through its final seven games. Friday night the Cyclones complete the series in Staten Island, game time set for 7:10pm. After Staten Island, the Cyclones will take on Hudson Valley, Aberdeen, and New Jersey to conclude the 2005 regular season.
