Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats fell to the State College Spikes 9-2 in front of 5,141 fans at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, on Saturday night.
The ValleyCats came into the game on the heels of a three-game sweep over the Aberdeen IronBirds. However, the Spikes, who extended their New York-Penn League-leading record to 26-9, built up an early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning, then three in the fourth, before 'Cats outfielder Derek Fisher got the Tri-City on the board with an RBI double in the fifth.
Second baseman Nick Tanielu also added an RBI in the frame, while stretching his hitting streak to seven games. Over that span, the Huntsville, Ala., native is hitting .429 (12-28) with eight runs batted in.
For State College, catcher Brian O'Keefe, a 2011 graduate of Colonie High School, went 2-4 with a run scored.
The ValleyCats will look to rebound tomorrow, as they will take on the Spikes in the second game of this three-game series. On the mound for Tri-City will be RHP Austin Chrismon (3-2, 4.40), with RHP Fernando Baez (2-0, 1.73) getting the start for State College.
Tomorrow will also feature SouthPaw's Birthday Bash, with the ValleyCats players and coaches wearing specialty SouthPaw jerseys, which will be auctioned off to benefit the American Cancer Society.
