Burlington, VT - The Hudson Valley Renegades improved to 26-9 with their 4-0 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Saturday evening. They put up four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead and didn't look back the rest of the way. Hunter Wood went six innings on the mound with five strikeouts and no runs against him, picking up his first win of the season. After taking the last two games against Auburn, the Renegades have now won their last three games and improve their road record to 11-6 in 2014.
With a late night bus ride from Auburn to Vermont on Friday night, the odds were certainly against the Renegades with an early first pitch of 6:05 PM. While it took both teams some time to get the bats going, Hudson Valley struck first scoring all four of the games run in the top of the fifth inning. Clayton Henning was hit by a pitch to begin the frame, Wilmer Dominguez reached on a walk and then Alec Sole singled to load the bases with nobody out. After an RBI sacrifice fly from Braxton Lee, Hudson Valley took the game's first lead and they were not done just yet. Coty Blanchard came up next, and with a full count he homered to expand his teams lead to four runs. The score would not change the rest of the game.
Hunter Wood was able to hold down his end of the bargain, in another great outing by a Hudson Valley starting pitcher. He gave up no runs and just one walk, en route to his first win of the year. He now has a record of 1-1, and with his five strikeouts in the game he's K'd 29 this season. Through 30.2 innings pitched, the righty has a 2.05 ERA, good for eighth in the league.
Offensively, the Renegades had four players with a hit in the contest. Braxton Lee, Coty Blanchard, Jace Conrad and Alec Sole had the base knocks, with the highlight coming on Blanchard's 3-run shot. With a combined scoreless nine innings from Wood and Ely Echarry, four runs were plenty for the New York-Penn League's best overall pitching staff. Echarry went three innings with two strikeouts and no runs in his relief appearance, garnering his third save of the year.
