Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Niles, OH- The Aberdeen IronBirds fell to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 5-3 in the first game of a three game set Saturday night. Following another late inning loss, the IronBirds fell to 10-24 on the season.

LHP Bennett Parry started the game for the IronBirds and he would pitch 4.2 innings, giving up two earned runs off five hits, striking out four. Parry would make quick work of the Scrappers lineup through the first three innings, allowing just one hit.

Parry would get two quick strikeouts to start the 4th inning but then ran into trouble. D'Vone McClure reached base on a walk to start the two out rally bringing Josh McAdams to the plate. McAdams would drill a single to right field, and Riley Palmer would try to gun down a speedy McClure at third base. However, the throw went wide and McClure would come around to score, giving the Scrappers a 1-0 lead.

The IronBirds would not wait long to respond, however, as they bounced back with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Alex Murphy led the inning off with a double, his fifth of the year, on a line drive down the left field line. Following a wild pitch which advanced Murphy to third, Hector Veloz singled to right field, scoring Murphy. Riley Palmer followed Murphy's double and Veloz's single up with a double of his own into the right field corner. Veloz came around to score on the double and, when Scrappers right fielder Greg Allen had trouble fielding it, Palmer advanced to third. Palmer eventually scored on a wild pitch with Steve Wilkerson at the plate. Aberdeen led 3-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Scrappers would score two quick runs off a Bradly Zimmer two run home run which cleared the right field fence. That home run, followed by a single, chased Parry from the game. Derick Bleeker came in and got the third out.

With the game tied heading into the 8th inning the IronBirds' late game momentum continued to go the opponents way. Nigel Nootbaar replaced Derrick Bleeker and got two quick out to start the inning. The Scrappers would not go away easily as D'Vone McClure singled on a line drive up the middle. McClure would come around to score on a Yonathan Mendoza single through the left side as IronBirds left fielder Oswill Lartiguez's throw home went wide. The Scrappers added one more run in the eighth after Greg Allen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Josh McAdams.

The IronBirds will look to respond in the middle game Sunday evening against the Scrappers and get their first win of the road trip. RHP David Hess will take the mound for the IronBirds and face off against RHP Kieran Lovegrove of the Scrappers.
