-SPIKES START SECOND HALF OF ROAD TRIP TONIGHT: The State College Spikes are tied with Hudson Valley for the best record in the New York-Penn League, and tonight they renew acquaintances with the Tri-City ValleyCats in the first game of a three-game set at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. The series will finish the Spikes' six-game road trip against Stedler Division teams as they return home on Tuesday for a five-game homestand. Tri-City defeated the Spikes, 2 games to 1, in last year's NYPL Championship Series. However, the Spikes won the only game of the series held at Bruno Stadium, 2-1, in 11 innings. Jacob Booden, a member of this year's Spikes, earned the win in that game. The Spikes are 12-12 in the all-time regular season series against the ValleyCats, with a 6-6 record at Bruno Stadium.
-LAST GAME: Rowan Wick smashed his 14th home run of the year to get within nine of the New York-Penn League single-season record, and Will Anderson produced another quality start to earn his fourth straight win as the State College Spikes defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters, 6-3, on Friday night at Centennial Field.
Wick's home run, a two-run shot to right-center field in the fifth inning, capped the scoring and brought the North Vancouver, BC native closer to the short-season league record of 23 home runs set by John Hennell of Utica in 1982.
Anderson yielded three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings of work. The Spikes right-hander struck out four in his first road start of the season, and retired nine straight batters from the third inning to the sixth.
State College trailed, 3-1, going into the fourth inning, but got doubles from Alex De Leon, Nick Thompson and Ronnierd Garcia to tie the game. Collin Radack then singled to knock in the go-ahead run and give the Spikes a lead they would not relinquish.
-PEREZ MAKES START FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Left-hander Dewin Perez makes his team-leading seventh start of the year for the Spikes tonight. Last time out, Perez allowed just one walk over three innings of work before rain shortened his start against Staten Island. The southpaw also maintained his streak of 403 batters faced without allowing a home run that stretches back to his first outing in the Dominican Summer League in 2012. On the year, Perez has struck out 18 and walked nine while allowing 22 hits in 25 2/3 innings.
-2013 RETURNEE FANT GOES TO HILL FOR 'CATS: Left-hander Randall Fant makes the start for the ValleyCats this evening. Fant was a member of the 2013 ValleyCats squad that defeated the Spikes in the NYPL Championship Series, but did not pitch in any of the three games. The southpaw did face the Spikes on July 30 in a regular season start at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, and was touched for four runs on seven hits over three innings of work. Fant, the Astros' 29th-round draft choice in 2013, started this season with four appearances in the GCL before rejoining Tri-City.
-WICK IT...WICK IT REAL GOOD : Rowan Wick has continued to keep up his early pace, picking up his 14th home run of the season last night at Vermont. The North Vancouver, BC native is currently bidding for the NYPL's Triple Crown, as he is leading the loop with 37 RBI and his .370 average is just behind the .385 of Tri- City's Bobby Boyd for the league lead. Wick is also leading the league in on-base percentage (.477), slugging percentage (.815), extra-base hits (20), runs scored (28), total bases (88), and intentional walks (three). The Canadian slugger also holds a 23-game on-base streak, which is just one game behind the record of 24 games set by David Rubinstein over the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
-SPIKE MARKS: Albany native Brian O'Keefe makes a homecoming to the Capital Region of New York this weekend after starring at Colonie High School before playing at Saint Joseph's University...O'Keefe helped lead Colonie to an 18-2 record in his senior season of 2011...Jake Stone holds a 13-game hit streak, the second-longest active streak among NYPL players behind the 14-game string of Staten Island's Luis Torrens...Stone is hitting .391 with three homers and 16 RBI in 13 July games
