Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Coty Blanchard capped a four-run fifth inning with a three-run homer, while Hunter Wood and Ely Echarry combined on a four-hit shutout as the Hudson Valley Renegades open a three-game series at historic Centennial Field with a 4-0 New York-Penn League victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Saturday evening.

The game was scoreless until the fifth when the Renegades loaded the bases off Vermont starter Jose Torres on a hit batter, walk and flyball single to centerfield. Braxton Lee followed with a sacrifice fly to center to plate the first run and was the last batter faced for Torres, who came out of the game after allowing three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings but also leaving two runners on base.

Blanchard was the first batter against reliever Tyler Hollstegge and worked the count full at 3-2 before lining the three-run homer just inside the foul pole down the leftfield line. It was the first home run of the season for Blanchard and the league-leading 26th allowed by Vermont pitchers this season. It would also be the last hit given up by Lake Monsters pitchers as Hollstegge got the final two outs of the fifth before Daniel Gossett and Dominique Vattuone both tossed two hitless innings against a Renegades team that was second in the league with a .271 team average.

But Vermont could not get any offense going against Wood and Echarry as the Lake Monsters were shutout for the second time in the last four games (were one-hit by State College on July 16th).

Wood (1-1) allowed just two hits, a one-out Trent Gilbert single in the first and one-out Joe Bennie double in the fourth, with one walk and five strikeouts over six innings. Echarry gave up two hits, leadoff singles in both the eighth and ninth, with two walks and two strikeouts over three innings for his third save.

The shutout was the league-leading sixth of the season for Hudson Valley (26-9), which has won nine of its last 11 games Gilbert had two of the four hits for Vermont (11-23), which has now lost six of its last seven and 12 of 17 in the month of July.

The two teams will play the second of the three-game series at Centennial Field on Sunday beginning at 5:05 pm. It is Hananford's Help Fight Hunger Night with fans receiving one free grandstand ticket voucher for a future Lake Monsters game with a donation of at least one non-perishable food item. Fans can also stick around after the game for "Have A Catch" Sunday in the Centennial outfield.
