TROY - After winning in extra innings last night, the Tri-City ValleyCats (9-11) couldn't find late-inning magic again, falling to the State College Spikes in 11 innings, 7-5, at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. Tri-City lost their first extra-inning game of the season, after winning last night's 12-inning contest, and a 17-inning marathon against Brooklyn earlier this year.

The 'Cats trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the 9th inning, when Ryne Birk deposited his second home run of the season over the right field wall, a 381 foot blast. Birk finished the night 4-5, with two singles, a double, a run scored and three RBI, raising his batting average to .333.

State College improves to 8-2 on the road, and rode a strong start from Bryan Dobzanski, who pitched into the seventh inning, striking out five and allowing three runs (one earned). In two innings of relief, Spencer Trayner (BS, 1) allowed the Birk homer, before Eric Carter (W, 1-0) came on to close the game, striking out five in two innings.

Tri-City picked up another homer in the bottom of the 11th, when Chuckie Robinson sent a 416 foot solo shot over the wall in left center field, his first professional home run. With a single in the bottom of the 9th, Stephen Wrenn increased his on-base streak to 19 games, the longest active streak in the New York-Penn League. Randy Cesar extended his hit streak to eight games with a 6th-inning single.

Erasmo Pinales turned in a strong start for the ValleyCats, striking out two and allowing only one run in five innings of work. The bullpen was shaky in relief, as Sebastian Kessay, Carlos Sierra (L, 0-2) and Howie Brey combined for six innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, walking six batters.

The ValleyCats head on the road for six games, including a three-game series in West Virginia beginning Friday, and three games in Mahoning Valley against the Scrappers starting Monday. The 'Cats come back home on July 14, hosting the Connecticut Tigers in a three-game set.
