Auburn Doubledays News Release
The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, shut out the Lowell Spinners in a 1-0 win on Wednesday night. Left-hander McKenzie Mills threw five innings of one-hit baseball in the win.
The Doubledays (12-8) scored in the first inning off right-hander Jacob Dahlstrand. Blake Perkins led off with a single. Perkins advanced to third base on a Daniel Johnson single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Kelvin Gutierrez followed with a ground out into a fielder's choice. Johnson was out at second, but Gutierrez was safe at first and Perkins scored from third base to give the Doubledays a 1-0 lead.
The Spinners (13-7) didn't have an answer for any of the Doubledays pitchers. Mills pitched five innings for Auburn while allowing just one hit and no runs. Mills walked two batters and struck out four. Doubledays relievers Russell Harmening and Kevin Mooney both held the Spinners scoreless in three innings of combined work. Angher Cespedes pitched the ninth inning for Auburn. Cespedes retired all three batters he faced for his third save of the season.
The Doubledays have an off day on Thursday, but Auburn returns to action on Friday with a three-game road trip to State College. Game one of the series between the Doubledays and Spikes begins at 7:05 p.m. on Friday. Left-hander A.J. Bogucki will make his first start for the Doubledays, while left-hander John Kilichowski will be on the mound for the Spikes.
