Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
BATAVIA, NY - July 5, 2016 - The Cyclones defeated the Batavia Muckdogs by the score of 5-1 on Tuesday night to win their third straight game. Three Cyclones pitchers combined to limit the Muckdogs to just four hits and Nick Sergakis went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI to pace the Brooklyn bats.
RHP Nabil Crismatt made the start for Brooklyn, his first of 2016, and struggled with his control early on. After Corey Bird singled to start the bottom of the first, the Brooklyn starter uncorked a pair of wild pitches, sandwiched around fly ball that moved Bird to third, to give the Muckdogs an early 1-0 advantage.
The Cyclones had several scoring chances early on, but grounded into a pair of double plays to end the threats. But in the top of the fifth Brooklyn was finally able to break through and knot the score at 1-1. Dan Rizzie and Darryl Knight had back-to-back singles to start the frame before Hengelbert Rojas hit into a fielder's choice, with Knight forced at second, but the relay throw from second baseman Rony Cabrera was thrown wildly to first allowing Rizzie to score and tie the game.
The Cyclones grabbed the lead in the top of the sixth when a pair of walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with nobody out. Blake Tiberi took advantage of the scoring chance with a sacrifice fly that plated Sergakis with the go-ahead run. But the rally would end there, as Darryl Knight grounded into the Cyclones third double play of the night to close the frame.
The Cyclones would build on their lead with one in the eighth and a pair in the ninth, all by way of a sacrifice fly, to make the final score, 5-1.
LHP Joel Huertas (1-2) got the win after tossing 4.0 shutout innings of relief, allowing just two hits and striking out four. The southpaw then turned the ball over to Adam Atkins who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the victory.
The Cyclones will look to complete the three-game sweep tomorrow night when RHP Erik Manoah (1-0) takes the mound. The team will return to MCU Park on Friday, after a league wide off day, to open a three-game series with the Hudson Valley Renegades. Friday night means fireworks on Coney Island, so be sure to stick around after the game for a post-game spectacular that will light up the sky. Tickets start at just $10 and are on sale now by calling 718-507-TIXX, logging on to BrooklynCyclones.com or in person at the MCU Park Box Office.
