Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY - For the first time this season, the Renegades swept a series as they shutout the Staten Island Yankees 3-0 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark Wednesday morning to completing a three-game sweep of the McNamara Division leaders. Hudson Valley held Staten Island to only four runs in the entire series on 12 hits.
The Renegades got the scoring started in the first inning as back-to-back singles and a wild pitch put runners at second and third for Hudson Valley with one out. That's when first baseman Nate Lowe hit a sac fly to left to score centerfielder Jake Fraley and give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.
Hudson Valley extended its lead in the sixth. With two out and Lowe at second following a passed ball, rightfielder Angel Perez sent him home with a double to left.
The Renegades would then add their final run in the seventh. Shortstop Bill Pujols led off the inning with a double, then moved to third on a ground out. With one out, Fraley grounded to Yankees first baseman Kane Sweeny. Pujols broke for home and the throw by Sweeney pulled catcher Charles Vasquez from the home plate area, which allowed the run to score. Fraley was thrown out trying to go to second on the play, catcher to short.
From there, it was all about Hudson Valley's pitching as three hurlers held the Baby Bombers to only four hits. Starter Eduar Lopez (2-1) got the win for the Renegades after firing six scoreless innings, allowing all four hits and striking out four. Relievers Elias Torres and Joe Serrapica combined to hold the Yankees scoreless over the final three innings and each struck out a batter. Torres went two innings, while Serrapica pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save of the year, all of them coming against Staten Island.
The loss went to Yankees' starter Drew Finley (0-2) who lost for the second-straight time to the Renegades. The right-hander went only three innings, and allowed a run on three hits.
The Renegades had seven hits including two each from Perez and Pujols who is 5-7 over his last two games. Each had a double in the contest with Perez driving in a run and Pujols scoring one. The Yankees' four hits were all singles.
Hudson Valley is off tomorrow before opening a three-game road series at Brooklyn. Southpaw Brock Burke (0-1, 4.61 ERA) will pitch for the Renegades against righty Gabriel Llanes (0-2, 4.71 ERA) of the Cyclones. The Renegades will return to Dutchess Stadium on Monday when they open a three-game series against the West Virginia Black Bears. First pitch is slated for 7:05.
