Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
NILES, OH ---The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored six runs on just two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to defeat the Vermont Lake Monsters 6-0 in a New York-Penn League game shortened to five innings by rain at Eastwood Field on Wednesday.
After three solid innings that extended Vermont starting pitchers streak to 20 straight innings without allowing an earned run, Lake Monster starter Ivan Andueza struggled with his control in the fourth.
Andueza hit both the first and third batters of the inning, sandwiched around his own throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt, to load the bases. Erlin Cerda followed with a two-run single to give the Scrappers a 2-0 lead.
Then after a groundout, Andueza walked three of the next four Mahoning Valley hitters to force home a pair of runs. The Scrappers capped off the six-run inning with an Andrew Calica two-run single off reliever Jesus Zambrano.
Vermont went quickly 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth and the game was halted by rain before the Scrappers came to bat in the bottom of the inning before ultimately being shortened to five innings. It was just the sixth five-inning game in Lake Monsters history and the first since September 4, 2013.
Vermont had six hits over the first four innings, including two hits for Eli White and doubles for both Luis Barrera and Eric Marinez. But the Lake Monsters also hit into two double plays and were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Andueza (1-1) was charged with all six runs (two earned) on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings for the loss. Despite the loss and six runs allowed, Vermont still leads the New York-Penn League with a 2.38 team ERA.
After a scheduled off day on Thursday, Vermont (10-10) returns home to historic Centennial Field on Friday for the first of a three-game series against the Batavia Muckdogs.
