Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
(Niles, OH)-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers used a six run fourth inning before the heavy rains fell on Eastwood Field to earn a 6-0 rain shortened win over the Vermont Lakemonsters.
After cruising through the first three innings, Vermont starter Ivan Andueza wouldn't make it out of the fourth.
The inning started when Andrew Calica was hit by a pitch. Alexis Pantoja would then lay down a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error by Andueza would allow Pantoja to reach base and put runners at first and second with no outs. Jodd Carter would then be hit by a pitch as well to load the bases. Erlin Cerda continued his hot streak with a two run single to score Calica and Pantoja for the 2-0 lead. With one out and two runners on base, Emmanuel Tapia would walk to load the bases. Silento Sayles would follow with a walk to bring home Carter for a 3-0 lead. Following a strikeout, Jonathan Laureano would also walk with the bases loaded to push the lead out to 4-0. Calica then capped off the scoring with a two run single to score Tapia and Sayles. It was Calica's first professional hit and RBI.
Before the bottom of the fifth inning could start the tarp was pulled and the heavy thunderstorms would cause a rain delay, eventually forcing the early completion of the game.
Scrappers' starter Aaron Civale would get a no decision in three shutout innings. He allowed four hits and walked one while striking out two. Tanner Tully (1-0), this season's 26th round draft pick from Ohio State, earned the win on Ohio State Night at Eastwood Field. He went two scoreless innings. Tully allowed two hits and did not record a walk or a strikeout.
The Scrappers (5-15) now head to New York City to open a three game series against the Staten Island Yankees on Friday night. The team returns to Eastwood Field on Monday July 11th to host the Tri-City Valleycats. Tickets are available online or by calling the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000.
