New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ The New Jersey Jackals avenged two losses to the Pride with a 6-1 win over Nashua on Sunday, behind the stellar performance of Raul Valdes.
The game was a pitchers' duel through three innings. Nashua starter Vince Davis had yet to allow a hit, while New Jersey starter Raul Valdes allowed three hits, but the Pride had no runs to show for them.
But in the fourth, the Jackals finally rattled Davis. With two outs and Alex Fernandez aboard first, Davis beaned Bill Peavey, and walked Joe Mihalics. That loaded the bases for Clay Kucklick who made sure they were empty after his at-bat. He doubled deep into centerfield scoring all three-runners, and giving a 3-0 lead.
A two-run homerun by Guillermo Reyes in the fifth, ran Davis from the ballgame, fattened the Jackal lead to 5-0.
In the seventh, tempers got out of hand. Nashua reliever Aric Leclair hit Fernandez with a pitch, and he immediately took steps towards the mound. The altercation between the two ended quickly, but Butch Hobson and Leclair were both ejected after home plate umpire Hammond Moore issued warnings to both benches. Jason Blanton came in to relief Leclair, and he surrendered an RBI triple to Joey Gomes. After seven complete, the Jackals held a 6-0 advantage.
New Jersey reliever Adam Nikolic came in to close out the lopsided game in the ninth, but he had massive control problems. Nikolic walked the bases loaded, and with two outs, he walked Bryan Duplissie to score the first and only Nashua run of the game. Jason Wylie came in and finished what Nikolic started, as he got pinch hitter Tommy Rojas to line out to second base.
The win went to Raul Valdes. He worked through early control problems to blank his former club in seven innings. He allowed only four hits, while fanning five, and walking two. Jason Wylie collected the save, although he recorded only one out in the ninth.
Vince Davis suffered the loss for the Pride. After looking good in the first three innings, he fell apart in the fourth and fifth. In 4.1 innings pitched, Davis allowed five earned runs.
