New Haven County Cutters News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT - Catcher Matt Hackney drilled the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning off the left field scoreboard for his first career home run that broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the New Haven County Cutters (15-11, 40-31) to a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Quebec Capitales (16-11, 32-38), Sunday afternoon, in the final game of a three-game series at Historic Yale Field.
Right fielder Doug Vroman kept the game tied in the top of the ninth for the Cutters when, with runners on first and third and nobody out, he caught a fly and made a terrific throw to home plate to nail pinch runner T.J. Shimizu who was attempting to tag up.
The Cutters trailed 2-1 in the seventh inning before designated hitter Derrick Gibson tied the game with a solo home run (10) to left centerfield - his third homer in two games.
Cutters' reliever RHP Mark Comolli took over for starter Tim Keinath in the seventh inning and held the Caps in check, retiring all six batters he faced.
LHP Corey Willey (5-2) pitched the ninth inning and recorded the win.
Caps' starter Keith Dunn (5-10) was very effective in his eight inning complete-game, giving up three runs on 12 hits including Hackney's game winning homer.
The Caps jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning after designated hitter Mathieu Bergeron delivered an RBI single.
Hackney tied the game in the bottom half of the frame when he singled home first baseman Chris Gaskin, who came through with a two out double.
Left fielder Nestor Smith doubled in the fourth inning and scored on third baseman Ryan Lehr's base hit to put the Caps in front, 2-1.
Overall, Gibson went 3-for-4 and Hackney went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Cutters begin a three-game series Tuesday night at Historic Yale Field.
RHP Jarrett Stawarz (5-5, 6.32 ERA) will take the mound for the Cutters.
