American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release
(Nashua, NH, Aug. 13, 2006) Raul Valdes worked seven shutout innings on Sunday as the New Jersey Jackals downed the Nashua Pride, 6-1, at Historic Holman Stadium before a gathering of 989 fans. Valdes (6-2), the former Nashua lefthander scattered four singles over seven innings of work, walking two and striking out five.
The Jackals (13-14, 38-34) scored all the runs they needed in the fourth inning on a three-run double by catcher Clay Kuklick. New Jersey made it 5-0 in the fifth on a two-run homer by Guillermo Reyes, his third of the season. The Jackals completed their scoring in the seventh on a Joey Gomes triple which scored Alex Fernandez.
New Jersey's final run came immediately after both dugouts emptied. Fernandez was grazed by a pitch from Pride reliever Aric LeClair. The Jersey outfielder charged the mound but was restrained before any punches could be thrown. Fernandez was allowed to remain in the game by home plate umpire Hammond Moore but both LeClair and Pride manager Butch Hobson were ejected.
Nashua's only run of the day came in the ninth inning when New Jersey reliever Adam Nikolic walked four batters. Jackals closer Jason Wylie was called upon to get the final out of the game as pinch hitter Tommy Rojas lined to second base with the bases loaded. For Wylie it was his eighth save of the season. James Lofton had two of the four Nashua (14-12, 31-37) singles in the contest.
Pride starter Vincent Davis (4-5) lasted just four and one-third innings, allowing five New Jersey runs on three hits. Davis walked three and failed to strike out a Jackals batter.
The Pride is off on Monday before returning to CanAm League action on Tuesday evening at 7:05 when they open a three-game series with the Worcester Tornadoes at Historic Holman Stadium.
The Pride will be hosting the inaugural Nashua Stars & Bars Charity Softball Challenge and Pub Crawl on Monday, August 14th with proceeds to benefit the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Nashua. The game starts at 5:30 PM and the five dollar ticket price includes admission to Historic Holman Stadium, two beers or sodas and a hot dog. Double Shot will perform live music throughout the game on the deck.
